Online Registration for Fall 2017
We will again be using the on-line registration process that we used last year. We found this to be effective and efficient for both families and district staff members. All families will log into Infinite Campus where they will have access to the documents and forms necessary for the coming school year. You will also be able to pay all fees on-line, add funds to your family lunch accounts and you will learn your child’s homeroom teacher for 2017-18, all from the comfort of your home. The tentative date for on-line registration to open is Monday, August 7. You will be receiving further, detailed information as the date gets closer.
Letters with Infinite Campus registration information will be e-mailed to you in early August with the registration information. If you would like assistance with online registration you may come to Waubesa Intermediate School between the hours of 7:30 – 3:30, Monday through Friday, August 7 – 25, and we will assist you with the online process and provide computer access. If these hours do not work for your family, contact Sue Murphy at 838-7667 to schedule an evening appointment.
Literacy Lowdown: Hello Summer!
What an amazing year it’s been! Students have grown so much as readers and writers! As we approach the end of the school year and the long summer days ahead, encourage your children to carry their learning forward. Often during the break between school years, students encounter learning loss in many areas. Research shows that simply setting aside a few hours a week greatly reduces the loss and helps children maintain much of their learning from the previous school year. This article, Helping Parents Understand Writing Workshop: Keep Learning Going Throughout the Summer, and the following list of tips and tools offer some unique suggestions for setting up your summer to include opportunities for both reading and writing.
Create a writing toolkit: a notebook, pens, sticky notes in different sizes and colors.
Design a space for reading and writing:
a special corner in your learner’s room with pillows and a clipboard
a beach towel and a water bottle for outdoor reading and writing
Be creative! Make cards, write letters, and create lists!
Tell stories to your child and with your child. Oral storytelling is an important precursor to writing stories so help structure them with a beginning, a middle, and an end. Your interest will encourage your child to add details. Record them by writing them down, using a voice recording, or saving them on SoundCloud.
Encourage your writer to capture favorite summer moments using photos, memorabilia, and notes about their favorite moments. Reimagine a simple notebook, or create a digital version using Smilebox, Canva, or Cliptomize.
Take field trips ~ a walk through the neighborhood, a visit to the library, trips to local museums, tours of nearby parks. Reflect on those adventures with words and pictures.
Does your child thrive on a challenge? Check out the WRITE BINGO boards for writing prompts and inspiration. Choose from this version or this version, or create your own!
Visit the site Sharing Our Notebooks, a site by Amy Ludwig Vanderwater, for many ideas on summer notebook writing.
Looking for books to inspire your writer? Check out this list.
Book reviews are a great way to share favorite summer reads! Sites like The Spaghetti Book Club allow students to submit book reviews.
Searching for a new reading, writing, drawing, or recording app? Here are a few teacher favorites.
Want to help your child select some “good fit” books? Scholastic Book Wizard (and here is a mobile version) provides the guided reading level for many popular books. Goodreads offers book suggestions for readers of all ages.
Best wishes for a safe and relaxing summer filled with memorable reading and writing moments!

From the desk of Interim Principal Ann Schroeder...
The 2016-17 school year has come to a close; it's been a pleasure to be part of the McFarland School District this year in my role as Interim Principal. I've enjoyed working with the Elementary Campus staff members, students, and District Office staff. Such nice things happening in the McFarland schools and community!
As I've mentioned earlier, Kelley Novak will be taking over as Principal this summer and you'll enjoy working with her; she's an experienced administrator who will hit the ground running in her new role as principal. Already, she has met with teachers individually or as teams, held a Building Council leadership planning retreat off campus at UW-Madison, attended PTO meetings, and taken the lead along with District Office staff on the new building project.
Our schools say farewell to retirees: CE Night Custodian Rick Thruman, CE Special Education Assistant Karen Meiers, and already retired in January MPS Educational Assistant Donna DeLacy. We thank them for their devoted work with our staff and students! We say good bye to staff members leaving to pursue other adventures: Special Education Assistants Sarah Lesperance and Liz Itzen. Lastly, Technology Teacher Susan Schmaling will be teaching second grade next year due to the addition of a 9th section, so we will be hiring a technology teacher for one year.
Encourage your children to keep reading over the long break ahead; enjoy your summer!
Ann Schroeder, Interim Principal

Appreciations
- Thank you PTO for your support throughout the entire year. Your recent contribution of $6,000.00 is much appreciated!
- Thank you classroom parent volunteers. We appreciate all of the time you gave throughout the year to help students in the classrooms and to provide support in so many other ways.
- Thank you fifth grade safety patrol. They did a great job watching the school grounds and staircases this year. Recently they went on a field trip to Wisconsin Dells as recognition for their hard work throughout the year.
