Parent/Teacher Conferences are being held on Wednesday, February 13, 2019 from 4:30-6:30 pm. These conferences have been scheduled for middle of Term 2 so that our conversations can help ensure your child will show continued growth for the rest of this term. This will then result in positive results on the Term 2 Report Card being sent home on Friday, March 22, 2019.
A letter has been sent home with your child outlining the process for scheduling the Parent/Teacher Conference appointment times. Please read the letter carefully and return it to school no later than Monday, February 4, 2019 with your teacher selections and preferred times. Every effort will be made to accommodate your request(s).
Please call the school office at 204-320-9488 if you have any questions.
Wind Chill / Outdoor Activities
Many of our students are coming to school without jackets, toques and/or mitts. Please ensure your child comes to school appropriately dressed for the weather. It's important students get the opportunity to get outside when the weather permits. Thank you.
HSD School Closure Policy
Extreme Hazardous Weather
Schools will close when weather and road conditions in Hanover School Division are such that it is not advisable to transport students via school buses. If weather deteriorates after the school day has started, creating unsafe driving conditions that necessitate cancelling bus service for the return trip home, students will remain in school until other arrangements can be made. Buses will not be sent out early.
Extreme Cold Weather
Schools will be closed for cold weather reasons when it’s too cold for students to be exposed to the elements for even a short period of time.
Schools will close for cold weather reasons when the temperatures are:
- -35 degrees Celsius or colder, WITH a windchill of -45 degrees Celsius or colder.
(Environment Canada – Kleefeld weather station, 6:00 a.m. data)
Consideration to close schools may also be given if either the temperature or the wind chill significantly surpasses these levels, or there are other extenuating circumstances as determined by the Superintendent and Director of Transportation.
Parent Choice
If concerned about child safety, Parents/Guardians may at their own discretion choose to keep their children at home during extreme weather. Parents/Guardians choosing to exercise this option should inform the school on that day, as per regular absence procedures.
Parent Notification
In the case of school closures or the cancellation of bus service, parents will receive a phone message from the Division’s information call system. Notice will also be made between the hours of 6:00 am. – 8:00 am. on a variety of local media outlets (AM 1250, Mix 96.7, CJOB, SteinbachOnline.com, and TheCarillon.com), including the HSD Twitter account at @HanoverSD. Information on school closures, or bus delays/cancellations will also be posted on this website.
Middle Years Provincial Assessment
As part of the Middle Years Assessment, schools will report to parents on the achievement levels of their Grade 7 and Grade 8 children in certain key competencies (important skills). Students’ performance will be compared to mid-grade provincial criteria in certain areas (competencies) of mathematics at Grade 7, and in reading and writing at Grade 8. In addition, at Grade 7 there will be a report on students’ involvement with their learning (student engagement). In the last two weeks of January, teachers prepare the reports showing the highest, stable level of achievement reached to that point.
What is being assessed?
At Grade 7 students will be assessed on:
- number sense and number skills
- engagement (involvement) with their learning (e.g., understands learning goals and works towards meeting them)
At Grade 8 students will be assessed on
- reading comprehension
- writing of informational texts (expository writing)
How will my child be assessed?
Teachers regularly observe students and discuss their achievement with them, and use the information to help children learn. Teachers will also use the information collected this way to prepare the required reports. An important part of this policy is involving students. The policy is
designed so that students and teachers work together to improve performance in these key competencies. By involving students they will learn more about themselves as learners and take more responsibility.
Is this a provincial test? No.
The assessment is part of your child’s daily work in class. Students and teachers discuss learning goals and gather evidence of learning from different sources.
Should I try to prepare my child for this assessment?
No special preparations are required. Asking your child about the specifics of the school day, monitoring any work completed at home, and contacting his or her teachers when questions or concerns arise are all ways to let your child know that you care about school and think it is important for students to be actively engaged in learning at school.
How do these reports differ from a report card?
The Middle Years Assessment reports are one of several ways schools communicate with you on your child’s progress. Unlike school report cards, these reports focus only on the competencies described earlier. Your school will also report your child’s results to Manitoba Education, Citizenship and Youth.
What should I do when I receive a report?
Each report will give you an opportunity to discuss results with your child and your child’s teacher to help you support your child’s learning in collaboration with teachers.
Where can I get more information about the Middle Years Provincial Assessment?
All middle years schools and school division offices have the policy document Middle Years Assessment of Key Competencies in Mathematics, Reading Comprehension, Expository Writing and Student Engagement. It, as well as other documents used by teachers to implement the policy, is available on the Internet: https://www.edu.gov.mb.ca/k12/assess/myreporting.html.
