April CKH Focus: Perserverance
What is Perseverance?
Perseverance is the willingness and ability to keep going when things are tough. People who persevere show steadfastness and give the extra effort needed to do something despite how hard it is or how long it takes to reach the goal.
Why focus on Perseverance?
- Perseverance encourages positive self-talk and thinking. When faced with difficult tasks, perseverance helps students reframe with positive thoughts, such as: "I'm not good at this YET!"
- Perseverance develops empathy. Students gain a better understanding of who they are and develop more empathy and compassion for others who may struggle to reach a goal.
- Perseverance sparks personal growth. Pushing through complex tasks builds resilience and helps students discover how capable they are.
Perseverance in Action:
- Share stories and challenging experiences. Be vulnerable and share personal experiences when you have struggled with a task or concept and had to work hard to push through.
- Praise effort and process, not intelligence or performance. Affirm students for the process they used to tackle tasks and point out how their abilities grow through their own hard work.
- Give your students the chance to struggle. Struggle builds self-confidence, independence, and perseverance. Resist the urge to intervene immediately and give students time to figure it out.

FIS - Teacher of the Year 2023-2024
Mr. Dustin Black -- RLA 7th Grade, Athletics Coach for Basketball, Track and Soccer
Dustin Black is a family man who values family, education, and God. Black is a seventh grade Reading Language Arts teacher at Freeport Intermediate School in Freeport, Texas. He is an avid musician who won many jazz awards in high school, acquiring first chair in the state jazz band and the state symphonic band. Black was selected to begin playing in the Bay City High School Jazz Band from seventh grade through highschool, where he quickly achieved first chair. He is currently playing in a band called The Revelry who recently played a concert with a student from Black’s first year. He has been teaching for three years in the Brazosport Independent School District and has previously had the pleasure of having ten years of experience in teaching music through private music lessons and ensembles. Black holds a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and a Minor in English from the University of Houston and obtained the English Language Arts and Reading with STR grades 4-8 teaching certification through iTeachtexas. He cherishes moments of learning as well as creating critical thinkers. Black thrives in the “powerzone” and is rarely seen at his desk as he conferences and provides feedback on student learning and reading at every opportunity. He utilizes and encourages Capturing Kids Hearts (CKH) and Kagan strategies in the classroom to promote positive, commutative, and collective learning. Through constructive, integrative, reflective, and equitable approaches, Black grows students' minds, thus creating the critical thinkers the world needs.

Name That Book!
Freeport Intermediate competed in the district Name That Book competition which was held at Lake Jackson Intermediate this year. Paige Eudy, Clairibelle Haagensen, Lucian Ishee, Izayiah Hernandez, Xiomora Koole, and Isabella Nunez placed second place for the 7 - 8 competition!
Students are required to read twelve novels on the Great Texas Mosquito List and be able to know from which book various clues come. Freeport was the only school in the 7/8 category to get a full four points in the third round of competition where two points are awarded for each right answer and one point is deducted for each incorrect answer.
Ms. Williams is so incredibly proud of her team who, above clinching the silver medal, demonstrated superb sportsmanship, and proudly represented Freeport Intermediate with their kind demeanor, helpful nature and respectful participation.
Finally, Ms. Williams and her team would like to publically and sincerely thank Paige's mom, Jana Eudy for making and donating our beautiful team shirts!
