2nd Grade - Soap for Sierra Leone
Sponsored by BSE PTO
PTO Supports 2nd Grade Service Learning
The entire BSE second grade was actively involved in a service learning project financially supported through the BSE PTO. The second grade students learned about some of the challenges that students in Sierra Leone have concerning hygiene and the scarcity of resources. The students engaged in an inquiry activity through making soap. Mrs. Summers, our guest speaker, who grew up in Sierra Leone spoke to the students. She shared the similarities and differences of the two cultures. Second graders viewed a video about the limited resources in Sierra Leone. Students engaged in a soap economy by producing soap and understanding the roles as producers and consumers. The product was marketed to the second grade parents. Overall, the students raised $930.00. The proceeds will go toward Water is Life. The money will help develop wells for the people of Sierra Leone.
