From the Library...
I was thinking how the last time our country shut down like this was during the polio outbreak (thankfully we get the vaccine now), and all they had to listen to then were radio shows. Kids were kept inside all summer with no TV, no internet, no cell phones. To keep entertained people listened to radio shows. Podcasts kind of do the same thing those old radio shows used to do. They can tell a story, or teach you how to do something, or maybe even just cause you to stop and think. These are some podcasts I’ve found that I think some of you would enjoy. You can binge listen to these or subscribe on Stitcher, Spotify, Apple podcasts, etc., and they can be played on phones, computers, tablets, etc. Check it out and see what you think!
This I Believe- interviews all different people from different walks of life and has them share the stories behind their beliefs. 14 seasons and hundreds of episodes available. Most are very short.
Youth Radio- young journalists covering a variety of topics. Just started this year. Around 30 minutes per episode. They also play a variety of music from different decades. I like listening to their accents too!
The Allusionist- this is all about language. For those of you that actually enjoy No Red Ink, you might give this one a listen. Quite a few episodes available and most are 30 minutes or less.
99% Invisible- this podcast seems like it would appeal to those of you that love robotics and design and architecture. Tons of episodes, most 45 minutes or less.
Reply All- podcast all about the internet, basically modern life and how to survive it. Seems timely right now since virtual is our only choice- no IRL for awhile. Over 100 episodes of varying lengths.
The Sporkful- this podcast is for people who love to eat. Relatively new, but there are still quiet a few episodes to listen to.
Welcome to Night Vale- this one if fictional and kind of weird. The right kind of weird in my opinion. Takes place in a small desert town where every conspiracy theory is true. Pretty long, ongoing tale and most episodes are less than 30 minutes.
StarTalk Radio- Neil deGrasse Tyson talks about all things space: stars, planets, humans in space, and so much more. He also interviews a lot of amazing people, from Buzz Aldrin to Alan Rickman.
Stuff You Missed in History Class- The title speaks for itself. Learn about people and events that are often overlooked in a typical history class.
Escape This Podcast- A show that is a mix between escape rooms and table-top roleplaying. They design escape rooms, complete with their own story, characters, setting, puzzles, and secrets. But these rooms are special: they only exist in the minds of the people playing them, and the listeners at home! Every episode, they invite guests to play through the escape rooms to see if they can find the clues, solve the puzzles, and escape. As a listener, you can join them and follow along, but that's not all! Every room that they play is freely available with each episode.
StoryCorps- One of the largest oral history projects of its kind, StoryCorps has recorded the stories of over 250,000 people in the U.S. Students at just about any grade level. Who knows. . .maybe you could even try to write and record your own for submission!
