Gee's Bend Quilters Coming Soon
One Aspect of Alabama Heritage Brought to Austinville by a Grant from Art Instructor, Beth Young
This February, the Gee’s Bend quiltmakers will come to Decatur! This is the second part of the artist lineup from Mrs. Beth Young's grant. All members of the Decatur area are invited to participate in the events.
Gee’s Bend is a small community near the Alabama River in Wilcox County. It was once deemed as one of the most impoverished communities in the nation. Quilts were in high demand here because for most of the 20th century, residents lived in unheated shacks that lacked running water and electricity. In the late 1960's, the quilts got their first national exposure through the Freedom Quilting Bee in Camden. In the latter part of the 20th century Atalanta museum curator, William Arnett “discovered” them and became a catalyst by putting their art in museums around the country. They are now international stars. Their art can be seen in major museums throughout the world, including the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. Their art is often compared to the art of modern artists such as Klee or Mondrian. They have an amazing attitude of “take what life gives you and make the most of it.”

The Carnegie Museum of Art will exhibit Gee’s Bend Quilts Free! (This could be a great field trip!)
January 30 Irene Latham, who wrote Leaving Gee’s Bend will be at the Decatur Public Libriary to sign books. The public can check out books as part of a Decatur “River Read.” These books, along with other Gee’s Bend literature, are available to check out here at Austinville, too.

Fourth and Fifth Grade Hold January 4-H Meetings
4-H Extreme Birdhouse Projects
- Birdhouse can not be larger than 18 inches x 18 inches x 18 inches. This includes any base the birdhouse is attached to since the entire birdhouse is measured.
- You must create an original design and do all the construction yourself. NO kits allowed. Do not build from an existing birdhouse.
- When working with power tools, cutting tools, or any dangerous equipment, work under the supervision of an adult and follow safety directions listed on the owner's manual and on the equipment.
- Use appropriate safety equipment such as goggles, gloves, masks, and ear plugs.
Mrs. Bridgett Hayes and 4-H Agent, Mr. Kenneth Gamble were both excited at the number of students that participated in this year's project. Sixty-nine students participated in this month's Extreme Birdhouse project. There are 100 fourth and fifth graders at Austinville.
Photography is next month's project and is due on February 18. This activity will allow students to show their creativity with a camera. The meeting closed with Mr. Gamble sharing information concerning the 4-H Roundup to be held March 15.
