Swansboro High School
Weekly Updates April 26, 2020
We hope our weekly newsletter find you and your family well and enjoying this beautiful Carolina weather. This will probably be the most important call we make this year so please listen carefully for updates. As you are aware, Governor Cooper announced on Friday that instruction would continue to be facilitated remotely for the remainder of the 2019/2020 school year.
We understand that parents of seniors are anxious about graduation plans. Decisions about graduation will be made by Dr. Collins, our superintendent and the Onslow County Board of Education in the coming weeks and will be based on Governor Cooper's restrictions for large group gatherings in mid to late June. At Swansboro High School, we are committed to celebrating milestones and making each event special for our seniors and their families. Decisions regarding prom and project graduation will be evaluated this week with input from seniors and parents. Parents of seniors are invited to a zoom project graduation meeting on Thursday at 5 pm to discuss options and students will be given the opportunity to vote on their preferences for both events on Friday of this week. Please note that all options will be pending and in compliance with North Carolina stay-at-home guidelines.
Additionally, the North Carolina State Board of Education met and made significant decisions regarding grading for students in grades 9-11. While I will briefly explain those updates today, I would encourage parents to take advantage of virtual parent meetings this week which will be offered to explain the policies in depth and to answer questions.
We are encouraging all students to continue working for content knowledge and the social emotional wellness of remaining connected with teachers and classmates. Our students in grades 9-11 will have 2 options in regards to grades for the spring semester. Students can opt for their G4 grade or the average of the 3 grading periods (G4/G5/G6). Option 2 allows for students to replace their grade with a pass/withdraw code - PC 19 if they were passing the course or a WC 19, which means they have withdrawn from the course. Neither pass or withdraw codes would be factored into their GPA however a pass code allows for course credit whereas a withdraw does not. Please note that students need to continue working in their courses to be exposed to the content in order to ensure their success next year. While tempting, exiting a course prematurely could result in academic struggles next year because students would be missing key concepts. For example, a student currently enrolled in Math 2 needs to be exposed to the standards and have an understanding of concepts before being successful in Math 3 next year.
We understand this is a complicated policy and would encourage parents to participate in our virtual meetings this week to gain a better understanding of student options.
