Mustang Minute
Week of March 18, 2024
Welcome to the Mustang Minute!
As fellow parents of Mill Street Students, Home & School encourages and facilitates a cooperative partnership among our students, parents/guardians, and school staff and administration. H&S is our school’s version of a PTO or PTA, and our goal is to support and enhance the school experience of each student. There are no dues--just an open invitation to stay informed and get involved at whatever level you can. We look forward to and appreciate your involvement!
Please email us at millstreeths@gmail.com with any questions, ideas or concerns!

School-wide Act of Kindness Opportunities
Our second school-wide act of kindness opportunity occurs during week two. Between Monday, March 18th, and Friday, March 22nd, students can participate by bringing in a non-perishable item for our food drive.
Closets feeling crammed? Drawers not fully shutting? Kids complaining that they don't have enough leaves on the kindness tree? We have the answer! Help us with our Earth Month Clothes Collection Challenge!
Mill Street is competing for cash prizes this Earth Month! Schools with the most donations by weight have an opportunity to win up to $1,500! Here's what you do:
1. Bag surplus clothes, shoes, purses, belts, linens, socks, etc. (Condition doesn't matter - just make sure they're clean!)
2. Deposit bags into the green and white bin on our campus.
3. Log the act of kindness on RaiseCraze!
The great news? USAgain Tree Machine bins make a huge impact! All items are either resold, repurposed, or recycled. Look at what Mill Street has done since only 12/23/2023!
Additionally, all items in good condition help support women owned businesses in Central America, who rely on their resale business to feed their families.
Week 2 Incentives
All students who have registered and raised $30 or completed 3 acts of kindness by midnight on Thursday, March 21st, will be entered into Friday's drawing. Six students will be selected to come to the office and choose a prize from the kindness bucket.
To conclude week two, all students who have registered and raised $30 or completed 3 acts of kindness by midnight on Sunday, March 24th, will be entered into the second drawing, which will take place on Tuesday, April 2nd. Students have the opportunity to be entered into the weekly drawing twice, once on the 22nd and again on April 2nd if they have met the requirements.
Week two classroom prizes will be calculated based on donations and acts of kindness that are received or logged by midnight on Sunday, March 24th.
Note: Donations will automatically show up on your student's dashboard, but completed acts of kindness will need to be logged.
Yearbook Club Photos
The Yearbook Committee will be taking club photos for the yearbook on Wednesday, March 20th. The following clubs will be photographed: Run Club will be before school starts at 7:30 am. All other groups will be photographed after morning announcements, including Battle of the Books, Lego League, Mustang Leaders, Choir, Service Club, Girl Scouts, and Boy Scouts. Photos of band and orchestra will be taken on an alternate date.
Plant Sale
Spring is almost here! Beginning March 4th, Mill Street Home & School is once again hosting our annual Spring Plant Sale. We are offering a wide assortment of beautiful hanging baskets which can be hung as-is, used as patio pots, or repotted as you wish. They also make great Mother's Day gifts for the special people in your lives! This year, we are also offering a variety of vegetables and herbs for your home gardens! We thank Big John's Farm Market, a local nursery in Illinois, for partnering with us to provide this opportunity to purchase high-quality plants in a simple and convenient way.
Ordering and paying for your plants by Friday, April 5th is quick and easy using our online store in CheddarUp!
Order pick-up will be at Mill St. School on Friday, May 3rd from 8:30-11:00am in the MPR. The Spring Book Fair will also be underway, so you can shop for your kids' favorite titles when you pick up your plants! Additionally, we will have a limited number of veggie and herb plants to purchase on the day of pick-up.
Thanks in advance for your support. For any questions or to arrange an alternate pick-up option if the above timing doesn't work, please reach out to Kristen Karczynski (kris10csmith@gmail.com) or Carol Cantor (cantorc@gmail.com).
Solar Eclipse
All students will receive instruction and participate in activities related to the eclipse during their specials classes on 4/8. In addition, here is a resource you may use at home (Solar Eclipse) to supplement the learning happening at school. Due to the optimum viewing time of the event so close to the end of the school day, (2:06 p.m.) the size of our population and logistics regarding guaranteeing student safety in viewing the eclipse, our students will not be participating in a school-wide viewing event.
If you would like your child to view the eclipse, you are welcome to sign your student out to participate in viewing the event under your direct supervision. For those families interested in participating, the district has purchased special glasses to ensure the safety of all participants. These glasses are specifically designed for viewing solar phenomena and meet the necessary safety standards. These glasses will be provided to families upon request.
Thank you for your continued support and partnership in your child’s education. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the solar eclipse viewing, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

School Reminders:
- Late students in the morning: Parents, please walk your student into the building and sign them in. A parent is required to sign their student in at the main office with a time and signature. Do not drop your student off and have them walk in alone without a parent. Students are expected to be in their classroom at 8:10 am, with instructional learning beginning promptly at 8:15 am. Thank you.
- If your student is being picked up for an appointment or leaving school early for the day, please email their teacher and notify them of the pick-up time and whether your student will or will not be returning to school that day. It is important that the teacher knows the student's schedule so they can plan accordingly. Please bring an ID with you if you're signing a student out early or leaving for an appointment. Thank you.
- If your student is sick or will be absent, please report the absence via Infinite Campus or call the health office at (630) 420-6355 and speak to Mrs. Robinson. You may leave a voicemail if calling outside of school hours.
- Label your student's belongings: Please label your student's items such as jackets, lunch boxes, water bottles, etc. If your item is labeled correctly, we can return it to your student properly. Students can check for missing items at the lost & found table located near the gym & multipurpose room (MPR).
