Dear LES Families,
Happy New Year
Let us begin by wishing you a Happy New Year filled with many success and continued progress! At Leonardtown Elementary School, we place great value in seeing our students showing continued success and academic progress as they move through their academic journey this year. Each year, as we ring in the New Year, we see this as the ideal opportunity to check in with students and families to ensure that our students are on-track, prepared and ready to go for the second half of the year. What we have observed, as we approach the midpoint of the school year, is that students are academically strong and that our instructional support team remains energized. After a well-deserved winter break, we welcomed back students online and families to begin our work for the second half of the year to ensure that learning continues.
The year ahead is full of great promise and opportunities for students and the community, We want to thank you for your continued support and wish you a successful 2021!
Thank you!
We would like to personally thank all of the families and students that so generously and thoughtfully gave us holiday gifts and provided gifts to staff. We want to be sure to let our school community know how grateful we are personally. You definitely made our busy days and holiday a bit brighter with your gifts, and we are most appreciative!

IMPORTANT: Impact Aid and Emergency Contact Forms
- Student Emergency Information forms have been combined with the Impact Aid Program Survey Forms this year and are available for families online due to COVID-19 implications. Families are asked to log in to the Home Access Center (HAC) and complete the combined form electronically.
- SMCPS is encouraging all parents/guardians to please take the time to access and complete the combined form online, which can be located in the Home Access Center (HAC), where directions to access the online form can be found HERE for your convenience once logged in. A video with instructions is available HERE. The form can now be accessed in Spanish by clicking on the Globe in the top right-hand corner once the form has been Started.
- If you have more than one child in SMCPS, the repetitive info can be auto populated for additional children. After you fill it in the first time, then select the option to import data when you start the form for another child.
- The deadline for the online submission for Impact Aid Program Survey forms is January 15, 2021.
- Thank You!

School Culture
Whether we are face to face or virtual, school culture is critically important. The culture and climate of a school is visible and it is felt. A positive school culture says, "I am growing smarter everyday". "I belong here". In addition, by focusing on high academic standards, students have goals that they can and want to work towards. For example, our vision (can be found at the bottom of this newsletter) at Leonardtown Elementary School as a school community is, we believe that all children can learn through empowerment where academic excellence and social-emotional well-being is developed as a foundation to success. In this process, students, teachers, and staff can clearly see the goal and work together to fulfill the vision.
Do you remember being in elementary school? Did you ever go back to your old elementary school? How did you feel entering your child's school for the first time? I can recall all those feelings, and as principal, I am committed to ensuring that every child has positive memories of their school-age experiences. I am committed to working with our students, staff, and families to continue our progression toward these experiences.
Unfortunately, the reality across our nation is not every school or classroom welcomes diverse learners. As for this school, we measure excellence in how we form relationships and connections with each child and their family. To be a school of excellence, there must be a focus on the development of the whole child. As a result, a strong academic culture results and ultimately, our student's success.
Leonardtown Elementary School is a place of inclusivity. The place where every child is valued. The place where every child is respected. The place where every child is loved. The place where every child is welcome.
"Our diversity won't be a barrier but rather a reason for our success". - Unknown
