App Review
YoWindow is an interesting and unique weather app. The twist is that rather than seeing the weather information represented in the usual way with maps and symbols, in YoWindow the screen becomes a living landscape. This includes sound effects and the whole scene reflects the weather at that particular time. So if it is raining at your chosen location then you will see and hear rain in your YoWindow scene.
Users are able to move backwards and forwards in time by swiping right or left on screen. As they do so the scene changes in line with the weather as it was or as it is forecast to be at that time. Users can see not only the forecast for the rest of the day but also the weather for several days ahead.
The sunset and the sunrise in YoWindow happen at exactly the same time as they do in real life. If you use the swipe feature you can watch the sun and moon as they rise and set. That is, of course, as long as it is not a cloudy ady!
The landscape also changes depending on the seasons. So if your chosen location is currently in summer, the trees will have leaves on them but if it is winter, the trees will be bare. Users can choose a landscape that best fits their area. There are five themes to select from: village, airport, seaside, oriental and sky. Each one has its own set of animations and sound effects.
YoWindow is a beautifully designed app and is a really fun way to look at the weather. It is likely to appeal to visual learners and I can see it being particularly helpful to children who are on the autistic spectrum.
The weather forecasts are also very accurate. A lot of nice looking weather apps fall down on this point and let’s be honest it don’t really matter how attractive they are if you can’t rely on them. YoWindow actually still provides most of the information that you will see on more traditional weather apps. In addition to a temperature reading, the wind speed & direction, humidity and pressure are all displayed.
YoWindow does not contain any adverts or in-app purchases. There is a link to the developer’s website and parents and teachers should be aware that this is not protected. YoWindow is usually £2.29 / $2.99 but is available free for a limited time.
