In the Classroom with Corduck:
This week’s “classroom peek” comes from a visit I had to a Kindergarten class. The students were seated on the rug, the teacher was standing next to a large easel that held chart paper. On the paper was a “morning message” (letter format) written from the teacher to the students. Today’s message welcomes the students back to school, asks a question about what they did during the long weekend, and what the weather is. There are missing letters that together as a group, they work to identify what sounds are missing and what the letters are. A student fills in the missing information. By participating in this daily routine, they learn that writing is speech written down, proper letter formation, upper and lowercase letter recognition, associating letters and sounds, left to right progression, differentiate between a letter, a word, and a sentence, reading of common sight words, spacing, punctuation, and to look for patterns within words (word families). The messages are very predictable and most students can quickly help say and/or write the first letters and high frequency or sight words such as 'is', 'the', and a student's name. Watching this activity you could see the excitement in the children when they “solved” the mystery of what was missing.
