What is Psoriasis?
Psoriasis is a common skin disorder that forms thick, red rashes, and plaques. They can pop up anywhere such as the scalp, elbow, knees, and lower back. It can not be passed person to person but it happens to members in the same family. It usually is not serious, but when it heals it can come back throughout someones life.
Causes of Psoriasis
No one knows the exact cause of psoriasis but doctors believe it is a combination of a lot of different things. When something is wrong with the immune system it causes inflammation. Which leads to the quick creation of new skin cells. With psoriasis the build up of new cells along with the old ones lead to the rash. Things that can trigger outbreaks are emotional stress, surgery, or strep infections.
Treatment for Psoriasis
Luckily, there are many treatments. Some slow the production of new skin cells and others relieve dry and itchy skin. Your doctor will chose a treatment plan based on the severity of your rash. Some common treatments include steroids and cream, moisturizers, and vitamin D cream.
