PCMS Weekly Update
September 16, 2022
Good afternoon PCMS Families!
Today signals the end of a very successful and exciting Homecoming Week for us! We had a fun Pirate Time Homecoming Challenge in which the Pirate Time classes who had the most students and teachers participate (dress-up and bring stuff) on our Spirit Days won donuts for their class! Even the “Anything But a Backpack” day was awesome - the kids did great with that so thank you for your help! We finished up the week today with lots of ORANGE and BLACK ... love that PIRATE PRIDE!
And a HUGE THANK YOU to our 6th grade families who were able to make it to our Pastries with Pirates event on Tuesday! It was absolutely packed (as you could tell by the looong line!). But, that’s a great problem to have - we’ll take it every time!!
We hope everyone stays safe and enjoys the Homecoming Parade and Game tonight. GO PIRATES!!
Check Out What We Did This Week!
6th Grade Pastries with Pirates had the biggest attendance so far! We were happy to welcome all our parents and friends for breakfast.
Monday's PJ Day was a hit!
Tuesday's "Anything But a Backpack Day" showed how creative we are!
Wednesday, our Twinning was on point ... even down to the shoes!
Thursday we rolled out the Preppy/Greek Letters!
Friday we showed off our Pirate Pride!
GO PIRATES!!
This Week's CharacterStrong Focus
Here’s a quick recap of what we talked about this week in our CharacterStrong sessions - some good stuff right here!
- 6 Grade talked about Character vs Personality. In this session, we learned about how our character is what we practice - not what we prefer.
- 7 Grade continued their conversations on What They Value. In this session, we talked about how to put our values - what we judge to be important in our lives - into action with what we do, say, and treat others.
- 8 Grade is still Dreaming Ahead. This was the 3rd of 4 sessions where we looked ahead and planned for our futures. Thinking about what we have already accomplished can help guide our actions in positive directions. In this session, we think about personal values that influenced us in elementary school, experiences we've had in middle school, and how remembering and acting on our individual values can help us have the kind of high school experience we hope for.
Pirates in Action
All of our Pirates were in action this week! Here’s a quick recap of their games.
Volleyball: On Monday, we hosted Antioch MS and were defeated in close matches for both the A and B Teams. Our girls rebounded nicely on Thursday with both teams coming away with victories at Raytown Central MS!
Football: Both A and B Teams won this week against Nowlin. A Team won 35-0 while B Team won 42-0. The C Team took on Smithville and won a hard fought game in the final 2 minutes 12-0. Our last C Team game is on Thursday, October 13 at Antioch. A/B Teams will have their final games on Tuesday, October 18 against an opponent to be decided. All teams are 4 and 1 going into their final games.
Cross Country: Cross country ended their season Wednesday at RayPec. It proved to be their best meet of the year. We had eight boys medal (top 25 medal) and six girls medal (top 25 medal). There were 150 runners in the boys race and over 120 runners in the girls race. Great job and great season!
September Pirates of the Month!
Last week, we recognized our Pirates of the Month at our Pirates ROCK assembly. These students were nominated by their teachers for doing it the Pirate Way by showing great character! Our Pirates of the Month were London Sloctor, Ariel Humphreys, Ainsley Habel, Caleb Winkler, Logan Beck, and Lillian Talbot. These students receive a certificate, a gift bag with a water bottle, candy, and a DQ gift card. They also get a pizza lunch with a friend and enjoy some time in the game room with the PCHS Got Character Students. Congratulations - we’re super proud of them!

The #One Chip Challenge
In our efforts to keep our students healthy and safe, please visit with your child about the latest social media challenge called the One Chip Challenge. The challenge dares you to eat a chip covered in Carolina Reaper and Ghost Pepper seasonings. As a result, many people experience severe abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and difficulty breathing that can last more than 24 hours and lead to more severe health complications including hospitalization. We encourage you to speak with your children about the dangers of participating in this and other potentially harmful internet challenges. Thank you for working together with us regarding this!

If you have any questions please contact Coach Ratsch @ ratschj@platteco.k12.mo.us
Save the Date: Fall Parent Teacher Conferences Nov 2-3
Parent/Teacher conferences are scheduled for Wednesday, November 2, 3:30-7:30pm and Thursday, November 3, 3:30-7pm. We are offering both in-person and virtual options for conferences. This is a very important time for parents to discuss their student's progress with his/her teachers, as research has shown that parental involvement is one of the most important factors in a student's success in school.
Pirates ROCK Character Trait for October: Responsibility
Pirates R.O.C.K. (Raising Outstanding Character Kids) is a program designed to surround our families with examples of strong character traits through school experiences, at home, and reinforced in their community. Each month our community focuses on a specific character trait and students are recognized for exhibiting these traits: Self Confidence, Pride, Responsibility, Citizenship, Compassion, Individuality, Self Control, Integrity, Perseverance, Respect, Honesty, and Cooperation.
