Clark Weekly News
For the week ending 1/21/22
Gratitude and Celebration!
Thanks to the family of Liam Lepak for staff breakfast!
Another ping pong table is on the way thanks to the generosity of the family of Marcel Langella! We may need to host a spring tournament, so get that practice in!
The following Clark employees were recognized at the staff meeting this week based on words of affirmation submitted by parents.
- Mr. Judd- A parent wrote, "Mr. Judd is amazing. He managed to connect with my daughter in a smart way that made her feel he cared at a time when she was particularly vulnerable, and both of my children love his sense of humor and say he makes his class so attractive. The whole staff is amazing but I really wanted to say that we appreciate his way to connect with the kids."
- Public Safety Officers Santiago and Williams for the many hats they wear: Carline, golf cart patrol, parent / student / administration conferences, their campus presence and care for the well being of students.
Wishing Dakota Beurrier good luck at the MC Fair pageant. She will compete on Feb. 11. It's free that night, so go out and cheer her on!
We are so grateful to all of our students, staff, IRSC Public Safety Officers, and the Martin County Sheriff's Officers who partner with us to ensure we are safe. Our monthly active assailant drill was held Wednesday afternoon and everyone demonstrated they know what to do to keep safe if ever a lock down.
IRSC Public Safety Officers Jose Santiago & Martha Williams
Be like Sadie and save lives at the blood drive this Wednesday!
Mr. Judd proudly holds his crane award.

Earn service hours by making valentine cards for local senior citizens. VIPAmerica is once again holding their annual Love Notes and Roses Campaign. They are working with the Council on Aging to collect handmade cards to pass out to local senior citizens and veterans on Valentines Day. Many Clark clubs will be participating, but feel free to create some as a family or in the community and drop off to the collection box at the front desk no later than February 1. Starting Monday, there will be art supplies in the career cafe where you can send good wishes to those who need cheering up as the holiday of love and friendship comes near. Email Dr. Judd with the number you make to have service hours added to focus.
Do you love that you had the choice to attend Clark? Is there something you really love that makes Clark a great school for you? School choice week is next week and we have signs for you to complete. Stop by the table near the front office to write out why you love your school.
Some of you who did not have a first block last semester aren’t sure why we do the moment of silence and the pledge of allegiance. The simple answer is, it’s the law. But, the moment of silence was passed by legislators at the request of parents who felt students are stressed out and it would be a great way to start each and every school day with a minute to meditate, pray, sit and breathe, or whatever your heart desires as long as you are silent. Some people love it, others do not. But, it IS the law and every single student and staff member is expected to respectfully follow these daily mandates.

INFO FROM P.A.S.S. (Partnering Around Student Success) Meeting last night:
As part of the Partnering Around Student Success session on Thursday evening, our IRSC Public Safety Officers, Dennis McWilliams and Jose Santiago, provided an overview of the Stop the Bleed program to save lives. If you are interested in a future training, which would take about 1-1.5 hours on a To-Be-Scheduled evening, please email Mrs. Kohuth dkohuth@irsc.edu to share your interest and availability for April and May.
Attendees also heard from Bureau Chief Kammel of Martin County Fire Rescue relaying the scary realities of OPIOIDS and the crisis within our community due to addictions, PLUS the timely rescues and hope that can come from Narcan and even more long-term from MAT.
For the Narcan availability/access and any additional info on MAT or needed support for opioid addictions, Chief Kammel invites you to contact him directly:

Narcan:
Naloxone, sold under the brand name Narcan, is a medication used to reverse the effects of opioids. Narcan is commonly used to counter decreased breathing in opioid overdose and blocks the effects of opioids from 30 to 90 minutes. Naloxone may also be combined with an opioid to decrease the risk of misuse through injection. Life-saving effects begin within two minutes when given intravenously, and within five minutes when injected into a muscle. Narcan can also be administered by spraying it into a person's nose.
MAT- Medication Assisted Treatment- is a treatment modality for Opioid Use Disorder that uses medications like Suboxone to treat the withdrawal symptoms from long term opioid use. These medication bind to similar receptor sites in the body as opioids but do not induce euphoria or sedation. The medication is designed to prevent abuse through injection or inhalation. The medication dramatically reduces the pain of withdrawal and allows the patient to return to their life immediately. Success rates for MAT combined with counseling and PEER support is 60% successful versus 1% with traditional models like abstinence and faith based rehab.
New Horizons has recently opened an MAT clinic in Martin County to support this treatment method.

Every day is a celebration!
Make a Difference Mondays! No school. Hopefully you chose to do something to Make a Difference on MLK, Jr. Day!
Take Care Tuesdays! It is no secret that vaping and nicotine use is bad for your health. Did you know there are many free resources online and in person to help you quit when you are ready to take control of your health. See Ms. Jones for resources.
Way to Go Wednesdays! Today we want to recognize Megan Sheldon who found a military ID card when out for a walk around the front of campus last week. She promptly got it to Officer Williams who was able to locate the very appreciative Veteran. Thanks for being responsible, Megan!
Thankful Thursdays! Today we are thankful for those who keep us safe. The lockdown drill yesterday during block 4 was very well done and students, teachers, and all staff were able to show that they care about safety here at Clark.
Fun Fact Fridays! Did you know that passing out Valentines is a 600-year-old tradition. The oldest record of a Valentine is a poem Charles, the Duke of Orleans, wrote to his wife when he was imprisoned in the Tower of London in 1415, in which he refers to his wife as his "Valentine." For lack of a better phrase, the rest is history.
