Edward Kennedy "Duke" Ellington was born on April 29, 1899 in Washington D.C to James Edward Ellington and Daisy Kennedy Ellington. He was an originator of big-band jazz. As his parents beings musicians he naturally grew up with music in his blood. Around age 7 he started learning how to play piano.
