Once again the safety of our school was threatened, and once again our community reacted proactively to support one another. This type of event can be demoralizing, raise fear and cause many to question humanity. However, it is during times such as this, that our community must come together. We must not accept this as a "new normal." Rather let's use this as an opportunity to teach our children that there is strength in human relationships and community; together we are strong, and together we can create a more peaceful world.
Today we followed the "SECURE" protocol as directed by law enforcement. Their reaction time, and presence on campus and in the building was once again commendable. This protocol was deemed appropriate as there was no evidence of danger inside the building. If needed we can swiftly pivot from "SECURE" to "LOCKDOWN." To learn more about the STANDARD RESPONSE PROTOCOLS we follow, please click here. During these situations it is imperative that parents allow staff to give 100% of their attention to the safety of the students. Please refrain from texting your child's teacher or your child while in these situations. The school district will provide updates at least every 30 minutes. If you have questions about any of these protocols reach out to Zoe Stern or Ashley Bodkins.
Last week I shared the story, Most People, which talks about how most people are kind and caring, and want to do good and spread happiness. It is a simple yet important message. If you haven't already, please take a moment to listen to the story with your child. As always, counselors are available at school to talk with your child, so please reach out and/or encourage them to let their teacher know.
We are looking forward to conferences tomorrow and Friday. Teachers are very excited to share your child's progress and accomplishments with you, as well as areas for growth. Let's keep the focus of your conferences on the children, and not on these recent events. If you have questions or concerns, please let us know and we can schedule an alterantive time to speak with you.
In partnership,
Ashley

Pitkin County Library Cards
Why should my child have a library card...
1. Having a library card gives a child a sense of belonging to the library.
2. With a library card, a child will have access to the computers at the library and free wi-fi connection, online databases, audio books and more!
3. Having a card and visiting the library often increases the opportunity to learn to read.
4. Children with a library card are more likely to see the library as a positive place and form a relationship with the librarians that allows them to feel comfortable asking for assistance with information.
5. Having a library card adds to the enthusiasm a child feels for the library.
