The Lion's Share Newsletter
October 2020
From the Desk of Mr. Miller:
Happy October, Grant Families! I don't know about you, but Fall is my favorite time of year! I enjoy the cooler weather and all of the colors. Even though we have technically been in school since August, it still feels a little like the beginning of the year with students recently coming back into the building. I sincerely hope that school has been going well for you and your student(s), regardless if you are online or in-person!
I would like to send out a few friendly reminders to everyone. First, please be sure that your student comes to school with a mask. I have been very impressed with all of our students wearing masks in the building! We really haven't had any issues at all and they have done an incredible job! If you are sending your student with a reusable mask, please be sure to have it washed often. Secondly, I would like to remind everyone that does drop-off/pick-up on Shadowglen, to please be respectful of our blue handicap curb parking. Only vehicles with the proper identification should park in that area, which can usually accommodate 3 vehicles. If you are parked there, even for only a quick second, without the proper identification, you will be asked to move as we have families that use and need those spaces. Also, please do not drop-off or pick-up in the yellow bus loading zone. The yellow bus loading zone is only for our busses and for all day care vehicles. Also, please do not park in our neighbors driveways or block their driveways. Many times, neighbors have had to leave for work and find an unattended car blocking their way. Finally, and this is the most urgent, please do not let your student(s) run across the street unattended at all. I have seen many close calls when families let their student(s) run across the street. Safety is always a priority for me and I appreciate your help with keeping our Lions safe.
Soon, you will be hearing from your student's teacher(s) for upcoming parent/teacher conferences. As we are still not allowed to have visitors to the building, these conferences will take place online via WebEx. More details are soon to come!
Lastly, as another friendly reminder, please be sure to keep students home if they are sick. If we see any symptoms here at school, there is a good chance that we will have to call and have them picked up, as we have to follow district guidelines and protocols.
As always, I appreciate your time and effort in helping to make Grant great! Thank YOU for all you do! I hope you have a wonderful October and please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns!

Randon Acts of Kindness - Panorama Survey
As you may already be aware, Building Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is an important goal for our school this year. Students and teachers at Grant will participate in conversation, exercises, and activities to better understand these concepts and to reflect on how they perceive these skills and competencies in themselves. We are excited about his process!
In October, student in grades 3-5 will be asked to compete an online questionnaire that encourages them to reflect on their own mindsets and approaches to learning. All K-5 teachers will complete a 6 question SEL competency perception survey, for each of their students.
It is our goal to help students and teacher learn more about themselves and how they learn best by completing this process. The results from the questionnaires will be shared with your child and with their teacher and will be used for educational purposes only.
If you have questions about this process or if you'd like to learn more about how these activities help meet our 2020-2021 goals, please contact our school counselor, Patricia (Patty) Dennard patricia.dennard@d11.org and our school psychologist Michelle Kelly michelle.kelly@d11.org. Thank you for you ongoing support of your student(s) and of our school!
