Writing
This will be our last week for persuasive essays. Next, we will be moving into our Famous Hoosier research project. Information will be sent home this week and selections will be due on Monday, January 30. Famous Hoosiers will be announced on Tuesday, January 31.
Indiana History
We will spend the next two weeks studying about the first people who lived in the United States and Indiana. We will be discussing migration theories, Native Americans, and the how the arrival of Europeans changed how the Native Americans lived. Students will be taking notes throughout this unit and will be tested over that information on Tuesday, February 7.
Language Arts
Wordly Wise: We will begin learning unit 10 this week. 10A & 10B will be due on Thursday. The unit 10 test will be on Friday, February 3.
Words Their Way: We will continue splitting into our small groups for spelling this week. Tic-Tac-Toe activities will be due on Thursday and their quiz will be Friday.

Famous Hoosiers
- Do some preliminary research to make sure there are adequate resources that can be used for research. There are some great Famous Hoosiers, that are just difficult to support with research for this project. Tecumseh is one example that has very limited resources available.
- Students must cover the following topics in the research paper: the life of the Famous Hoosier (birth, childhood, schools, jobs, etc.), why they are famous, and how their fame has helped others. That last one is important! I often have students who want to be an athlete. Some athletes work well, while others do not. Peyton Manning and Pat McAfee are two that I have had done in past years who have made significant contributions to Indiana communities and work well. Simply being a Colts player is not enough for this project.
- As the parent, please look through the information and make sure the content is something that you are comfortable with your child reading. Some Ryan White research has references to AIDS and the stigma that it was a disease associated with homosexual behavior. Pat McAfee's road to the NFL started with underage gambling. Michael and Janet Jackson research often contains questionable photos for 10 year old eyes. If you are comfortable with your child having access to the information and any questions that may arise after reading it, we will typically allow it as long as it can be presented in a fourth grade friendly manner, but don't want any parents to be surprised!
- Below are some websites that are a good place to start your research:
https://visitindiana.com/about-indiana/famous-hoosiers
http://www.biography.com/people/groups/born-in-indiana
- Once your child knows who their Famous Hoosier is, start thinking about a costume. Many great costumes can be made out of clothes & props that you have at home or that a friend or neighbor may have. No need to spend a small fortune on a costume! :)
