Weekly Bulletin - April 19th, 2019
Happy Easter to all in our OLMP Family!
Catholic Easter Prayer
Lord, the resurrection of Your Son
has given us new life and renewed hope.
Help us to live as new people
in pursuit of the Christian ideal.
Grant us wisdom to know what we must do,
the will to want to do it,
the courage to undertake it,
the perseverance to continue to do it,
and the strength to complete it.

Student of the Month
April's Student of the Month is Sophie Thomas in grade 6A. Sophie was nominated for being: kind, responsible, considerate of others, and positive. She is a friend to everyone and is positive no matter the circumstances. She is good at making others smile and is always kind to everyone.
Sophie was nominated and won following input from a panel of student leaders and staff. All the students who were nominated along with Sophie and the grade 12 athletes moving on to post secondary were all recognized at an assembly on Thursday this week.
The student of the month award was created to recognize those who display exemplary behaviour in our school. Winners of this award get a prize package and a certificate to recognize this achievement.
Students and staff can nominate youth in our school by completing the online google form below or completing a paper copy from the office and submit there once complete.
The Great OLMP Book Race!
All classes were shared this during Grade 5-8 LA class and TAG time for 9-12 this past week. Voting will begin after Easter! Students and staff will answer a Google Form to establish a list of all-time favorite books. We are hoping for chapter books, but any favorite book is up for voting. We will start with the top 100, then we will have periodic votes to narrow it down. There will be periodic random prizes for contributors so encourage students to participate and share their favorite books! Thanks to Mrs. Froehler for organizing this activity for staff and students.

OLMP Program Highlight
This week we are highlighting the Cosmetology Program at OLMP headed by Mrs. Zimmer, who is also a practicing licensed hairstylist with 12 years experience in the field.
Our Lady of Mount Pleasant school has a great opportunity with their Cosmetology program in conjunction with High school redesign. It allows students to earn credit in Grade 9 for introductory modules of Cosmetology, which is unique to this school in Camrose. Currently, we are offering all introductory modules. This includes: braiding, where students learn: visible, invisible, two strand rope, triple strand rope, knots, and fishtail braiding. Other introductory modules are facials and manicuring. Modules that students can advance to are, shampooing, advanced hair design, hairstyling, and haircutting, and many more in both hairstyling and esthetics. Modules we hope to include in the future will be hair coloring, perming and waxing, once the program begins to expand further. The content provided and learned in cosmetology gives awareness for career opportunity. The Cosmetology program is still new to the school, but expanding quickly. Students can accumulate 55 credits in this course, 25 of which can be transferable should the student decide to pursue a career in the cosmetology field. The apprenticeship portion has been broken into two periods of 700 hours each, with a practical and theory test following each.
We also have Junior High Cosmetology. The junior high program is a great way for students to experience a small bit of what is to be expected in high school cosmetology. Students cover topics such as hairstyling which branches off into proper hair care and braiding. Nail art, nail care, and skin care are also covered. The students “learn by doing” in an activity centered environment. This course is a great experience for students to discover the world of cosmetology for future high school courses, but also give a variety of daily life skills as well.
Participate in a meeting of EICS Board of Trustees
On behalf of Superintendent Haggarty, and the Board of Trustees of Elk Island Catholic Schools we would like to invite all to our public meeting to engage in discussions around Catholic education.

Book Recommendation
Book Recommended: Don't Let Me Go
Author: Cathering Ryan Hyde
Recommended by: Daniette Terlesky
Book Description: 10 year old Grace does not want the county to put her into care, since her mom is not fit to raise her. Grace is hoping Billy, a tenant in the same apartment complex can help her out. Billy however, has not left his apartment in years, everything outside Billy's walls scares him. Can Billy help Grace out? Can Grace help Billy out?
Why it is recommended: This was the first book I read by Catherine Ryan Hyde and since she has become one of my favorite authors. This book is about unlikely friendships and how our friends play an important role in pushing us to do things when we don't think we can.
