1793: Chinese🇨🇳 vs. British🇬🇧
In 1793 China was growing and developing rapidly. Agriculture was on rise and the population was substantial. The British on the other hand were the total opposite. The British needed trading in order to even keep their population growing. The problem for the British was that the Chinese did not want to trade with them for the fact that they felt that they did not need to trade with the British, they all ready had everything that they needed.
1798: Napoleon in Egypt
In the past, Napoleon Bonaparte had invaded multiple places such as Russia and Italy. But in 1798 Napoleon decided to invade Egypt for a much different reason than all the other invasions. Napoleon did not want Egypt's soil or people. He wanted its culture and history. He wanted the culture and history so bad that he brought along 150 scientists with him to Egypt.
1830's: Famine and Rebellions in Japan🌊🗾
Beginning in 1824 Japan suffered from widespread crop failure. With the crop failure that took place it soon led into severe nationwide famine in 1836. Debt soon arose and the Japanese economy failed. This tragic time in Japan was also around the time the world famous " The Great Wave" was created.
1838-1842: First Opium War in China💊🇨🇳
The Opium War was a war fought between the United Kingdom/ Ireland and the Qing Empire in China. They were fighting over their opposing viewpoints on diplomatic relations, trade, and the administration of justice for foreign nationals.
1838-1876: Tanzimat Reforms in the Ottoman Empire
The Tanzimat series of reforms occoured in the Ottoman Empire between 1839 and 1876 under the rule of the sultans. These reforms, heavily influenced by European ideas, were intended to effectuate a fundamental change of the empire from the old system based on new principles to that of a modern state.
1850-1864: Taiping Uprise in China🇨🇳
The Taiping Rebellion was a massive rebellion or civil war in China that lasted from 1850 to 1864, which was fought between the established Manchu-led Qing dynasty and the Christian millenarian movement of the Heavenly Kingdom of Peace.
Second Thoughts
Self Strengthing Movement
China has soon developed new ideas for society using western ideas, both internal and external. Known as "self-Strengthing", the new ideas wee taking over the traditional ways of the Chinese.
Boxer Uprising
In 1900, in what became known as the Boxer Rebellion (or the Boxer Uprising), a Chinese secret organization called the Society of the Righteous and Harmonious Fists led an uprising in northern China against the spread of Western and Japanese influence there.
Commissioner Lin
Lin Zexu was a Chinese scholar and official of the Qing Dynasty. Lin's forceful opposition to the opium trade was a primary catalyst for the First Opium War of 1839–42. He is praised for his constant position on the "moral high ground" in his fight, but he is also blamed for a rigid approach which failed to account for the domestic and international complexities of the problem.
Chinese Revolution
The Xinhai Revolution, also known as the Revolution of 1911, or the Chinese Revolution, was a revolution that overthrew China's last imperial dynasty and established the Republic of China. The revolution was named Xinhai because it occurred in 1911.
Young Ottomans
The Young Ottomans were a secret society established in 1865 by a group of Ottoman Turkish intellectuals who were dissatisfied with the Tanzimat reforms in the Ottoman Empire, which they believed did not go far enough. Young Ottomans sought to transform Ottoman society by preserving the empire and modernizing along the European tradition of adopting a constitutional government.
Russo-Japanese War
The Russo-Japanese War (8 February 1904 – 5 September 1905) was fought between the Russian Empire and the Empire of Japan over rival imperial ambitions in Korea. The major theatres of operations were the Liaodong Penensula and Mukden in Southern Manchuria.
