EMS Parent & Family Newsletter - April, 2024
Greetings Eisenhower parents and families,
I hope this correspondence finds you and your student well, and enjoying the arrival of the warmer weather. The week of the school play is finally here, spring sports are in full swing, our spring Band/Orchestra/Choir concert and competition seasons are right around the corner, and the students are working hard to finish strong in their classes and related activities. The building is truly teeming with life in every corner!
To help support your student from as we enter the final quarter, please take a moment to review the information below. This newsletter has been divided three categories: schoolwide news for all, followed by 8th grade and 7th grade news, respectively. We thank you for your continued support of our students and school, and we look forward to a positive conclusion to another amazing year of growth and learning here at EMS!

Student input surveys - The student perspective is a key piece in our strategic planning and decision-making process. Accordingly, we will be administering two surveys to begin collecting important information from our students during the week of May 6. Please see below for more information on each survey:
- Roxbury's Portrait of a Graduate Survey. Please click here for more information from Superintendent Santora, including a link to preview the survey.
- Eisenhower's annual School Climate Survey for students. Please click here to preview this survey.
Note - Student surveys are generally administered during homeroom. Student participation is always voluntary. Let your student know know if you do not want them to complete the survey. They can sit quietly in class while others complete.

4/17 - Jazz Night Concert @ RHS (7:00 pm)
4/19 - Roxbury Spirit Day - Celebrate Abilities Month - Wear your most comfortable clothes. Notice how different people interpret comfort in different ways.
4/25 - Take your Child to Work Day 2024 - If you and your EMS student are participating, please note their absence in advance in Genesis as "Take Your Child to Work Day".
4/26 - Roxbury Spirit Day - Celebrate Abilities Month - Wear your favorite Roxbury or blue & gold gear. Show everyone Roxbury is a place that celebrates and includes EVERYONE!
4/30 - Anticipated drive through pickup for PTO's "Dezine Line Class of..." Spirit Wear orders (4:30 - 6:00 pm)
5/6 - EMS Spirit Day - Let's gear up for NJSLA testing - BLUE & GOLD!
5/7:

6/12 - Early dismissal for students (12:35 pm)
6/13 - Last Day of School for students (12:35 pm dismissal)
Information for 8th grade families:
Key dates and events:
8th grade field trips: Jeff Lake Day Camp (5/30) & Sandy Hook Lighthouse/Ocean Institute - We will be sending home paper copies of permission slips for each trip (linked above) this week. The deadline to return both forms is Friday, May 3. There is no additional cost for these trips as long as you have paid in full your 8th grade monies.
6/10 - 8th grade breakfast & yearbook signing
6/12 - 8th grade Step Up Ceremony - 6:00 PM at RHS. Dance immediately after at EMS (7-9 pm), additional details to follow.
* A friendly reminder - Participation in field trips, extracurricular programs, and other special events remains contingent upon student deportment. Please continue to encourage your EMS student to make good choices in and out of school, and uphold our core values of Respect, Responsibility and Trustworthiness in all that they do.
Information for 7th grade families:
Key dates and events:
April 16 - Rising 8th Graders - Electives Fair. We will hold an assembly to review the 8th grade elective/cycle courses available with current 7th grade students (click here for overviews). We will also show students how to work with you to request these course in Genesis via the Parent Portal.
- Parents/guardians - Please review/discuss these options with your student in the coming days, and CLICK HERE to learn how to access and submit course requests via the Genesis Parent Portal.
- Cycles vs. Electives - Note that Art, Civics, and Media & Public Speaking are cycles (all students will take), while choices are required for ELA, Math, STEAM and Music electives.
- World language - With rare exception, your student is expected to continue with their current world language selection and will be re-enrolled accordingly. They will have the opportunity to continue with the same language or select a new one as freshmen at RHS.
- Band/Orchestra/Choir - All students currently enrolled in Band/Orchestra/Choir are strongly encouraged to continue to pursue their passions through these programs. You will be able to re-affirm this commitment when you log into the Genesis parent portal.
- The deadline for course requests in Genesis for rising 8s is April 26 (updated). Classes fill quickly, so please complete in a timely manner to increase the chances of getting the electives you and your student want! If you do not submit requests, their courses will be chosen for them when the master schedule is created.
Coming soon! 7th grade's annual "City-State Project" (formerly 7th Grade Olympics). Click here for more information on this dynamic interdisciplinary unit of study! Tickets are also on sale during lunches via EMS Drama Club parent boosters. We'll offer a schoolwide "Sneak Peek" on Friday morning. Please send your student with the appropriate amount of cash ($12/ticket) if you would like to secure tickets in advance via cash. Tickets will also be sold at the door on a first come, first served basis.
NJSLA testing begins on May 1
Please see flyer below for more information and ways to support your student's best effort and performance at home. All students report to school at regular time on testing days (7:38-7:58 arrivals). All routine dismissals will continue to occur at 2:30.

Our Lost & Found is located in the main cafeteria. If you see anything above that looks familiar, please encourage your student to take a look. Each year, all unclaimed articles and items are donated to Roxbury Social Services over the summer months. Don't delay, check it out today!
