Flappers were one of the most familiar symbols of the roaring twenties.

Flappers danced suggestively and openly flirted with men.
Flappers also smoked cigarettes which was often seen as disrespectful.
Many Americans were terrified of the new flappers because they represented a new moral order.
Flappers were mostly middle class daughters.
Flappers prized style over substance, novelty over tradition, and pleasure over virtue.
They embodied the triumphs of the modern age.
