Digging Deeper
Writing from our hearts. Reading with our strategies.
Writing
We are getting into our writer's workshop. We have our writer's notebook filling with ideas. Our draft books are coming alive with our words.
As we craft our narratives (your story), we are planning to help guide our writing. We have built on the "seed story" and are now digging deeper. The focus for the next few weeks is crafting openings for our personal narratives that draw the reader into our writing. Exploding the big moment in our story to help the reader understand how we experienced the story. We are also working on closings that reflect on the lesson learned or important memory to enhance our writing. We will conclude with a time to share the personal narratives the students have been working on over the past few weeks!
Transitions are something that we will be sure to include in our writing to show the setting or time have changed.
We are taking a look at sensory details and figurative language. In 5th grade we are digging even deeper with poetic techniques.
We are moving in to informational writing after we finish our narrative unit.

STORY ELEMENTS AND CHARACTER
We will study characters in the story and delve deeper into our character unit. We we learn character traits and get to know our characters a little more.
Reading is Thinking Homework
(Homeroom) We are learning about how strategic readers think. We are learning and applying the following comprehension strategies to our independent reading: connecting, activating schema, questioning, visualizing, inferring, determining importance, summarizing, and synthesizing.
Applying our comprehension strategies to all texts that we read. The reading homework will continue, 100 minutes per week.
