Panther Pause
24 years of Pride at Colleyville Heritage High School
10.9.20
Dear Panther Family,
We’ve completed yet another week here at CHHS! I hope you are all safe and well. As we approach the second nine weeks, I just want to encourage us all to keep going! Believe me, I know this is difficult...very difficult. We’ve all been asked to do things well beyond our comfort zones during this time. The QuaranTimes have forced us to grow in ways we never imagined in such a short period of time. That growth has not come without pain, frustration, angst, and confusion. Yet here we are rounding out another week in the midst of the madness. I know it’s tough, but I am so proud of our Panther Family!!
For our teachers, they are working tirelessly to manage the great many challenges that come with what teaching looks like right now. Teaching both remote and in-person, simultaneously, is extremely difficult. But I have been impressed by the determination and solutions-oriented mindset our educators have embraced this challenge with. It is inspiring to witness the way they are pushing forward in the face of adversity for our students.
As we approach the end of the nine weeks I encourage everyone to pay close attention to Skyward and follow up on any courses where there may be challenges. For our remote learners, please remain in your teacher’s WebEx room during their asynchronous time to be able to get assistance, if need be. Our teachers have found this to be so beneficial.
Additionally, if at all possible, please have them turn their cameras on during instructional time. We understand that this opens a window into each and every one of your homes and that there may be times where having the camera on is just not feasible. But if you can, please get those cameras turned on. We know that a large percentage of communication is body language. Facial expressions tell a teacher a lot about what’s going on with a student - how they’re processing information - and this allows them to stop to clarify, ask questions, and really monitor the learning that is taking place in a much more efficient way.
Thank you for your support, encouragement, grace, and patience as we navigate the days and weeks ahead. Trust that we are in this with you to create the very best experience for each and every Panther! Have a blessed 3-Day weekend!
With Pride,
Dr. James Whitfield
CHHS Principal

Pink Out Wall
9 Weeks Level Down Window
The next level down window is October 14th at 8 am until October 16th at 4 p.m. The form will be available on the counseling website during that window. Please note that schedule changes cannot be made until after report cards post on October 20th.
PSAT/NMSQT
On Wednesday, October 14, 11th grade students in GCISD will take the PSAT/NMSQT, and 8th grade students will take the PSAT 8/9. College Board recommends that, "students bring and use a calculator they're familiar with on the Math Test--Calculator portion" of these tests. Please note that cell phone, tablet, and laptop calculator apps are not approved for use on the PSAT/NMSQT or the PSAT 8/9. Students are strongly encouraged to bring their own calculator. This will ensure a student is using a type of calculator with which they are most familiar.
If a student does not have their own calculator to bring, one will be provided by the district during the testing session. A calculator will be provided in a sanitized baggie, should be used in the baggie (screens are clearly readable through the bag), and there will be no sharing of calculators during testing. The provided calculator may be a four-function, scientific, or graphing calculator.
Included are some resources to familiarize yourself with the potential types of calculator a student could use. Again, please note that cell phones, tablets, or laptops are not allowed for PSAT testing.
- Four Function: This is like the calculator on your cell phone when you hold the phone vertically (portrait).
- Scientific: This is like the calculator on your cell phone when you hold the phone horizontally (landscape).
- Graphing: Here are some possible apps that are like the kinds of graphing calculators that could be provided.
- Calculate84 iPhone/iPad app
- TI-84 or TI-Nspire software 90-day free trial version
PSAT/NMSQT
If your child is a sophomore, the PSAT/NMSQT test will be offered to all sophomore students on Thursday, October 29, 2020. Remote learners have the opportunity to respond to this survey indicating their intent to test. The survey can be filled out beginning on October 14, 2020, through October 18, 2020.
If your child is a freshman, the PSAT/NMSQT test will be offered to all freshman students on Tuesday, January 26, 2021. Remote learners have the opportunity to respond to this survey indicating their intent to test. The survey can be filled out beginning on October 30, 2020, through January 8, 2021.
Students not testing will participate in remote independent learning during the time of the test. Testers will be released from campus at the conclusion of testing and buses will run at that time to provide transportation home. Grab-and-Go lunches will also be available for students on the day of testing.
For all students, the PSAT/NMSQT is also considered valuable practice for the SAT. Personalized feedback will be provided and students can also link their results to KHAN Academy for additional feedback. You will receive instructions from your campus on how to access this information after the test date.
For more information about the PSAT/NMSQT, visit psat.org, or contact our campus PSAT coordinator, Scott Saettel.

All testing rooms will be sanitized prior to testing.
All students are required to wear masks while on campus.
All students will be seated a minimum of six feet apart during testing.

What to Expect on SAT Testing Day -- October 14, 2020, for Qualified Seniors
On Wednesday, October 14, 2020, we will be providing an opportunity for qualified seniors to take the SAT (without the essay). Seniors who qualify for this opportunity are students who are designated as seniors and who have not yet taken an SAT exam provided by GCISD. We have been asking these seniors to sign up for the exam over the last couple of weeks so that we have an accurate headcount for attendance. If you have a qualified senior and have not yet signed up for the exam, please do so here by October 12. If you are unsure if your student is qualified, please feel free to email Kelli Mann, SAT Coordinator.
The following is intended to let you know what to expect on testing day. Please don't hesitate to contact Mrs. Mann if you have any questions.

Student Fall Survey
Growing our students’ social-emotional skills is an important goal in GCISD. We strive to create global citizens who are skilled problem solvers, effective communicators, self-regulated learners and collaborative workers through our Portrait of a Graduate. In order to identify areas of strength, needs, and support, students will be completing an online survey to align with Goal 2 of LEAD 2.0: designing learning environments that support social and emotional well-being.
The data we get back will help inform our educational practices and will help us continue to identify opportunities for growth and development in the classroom and across the District.
Beginning on Monday, October 5 through Friday, October 16, students will have the opportunity to complete the online survey during a designated class time. For students who are engaging in remote learning, an activity will be loaded into Canvas with instructions for you to be able to participate in this opportunity. Please be on the lookout for specific communication from your student’s teacher about this survey.
The survey for students in third through twelfth-grade will ask a series of questions on the following topics: grades, classes, performance in school, behavior and learning. Students in pre-kindergarten through second grade will be assessed on teacher perception of grit, self-management, social awareness, self-efficacy and learning strategies. The information collected will be used by the teacher and campus leaders to provide necessary support for students engaged in both in-person and remote learning.
If you have any questions regarding this survey, please contact Amanda Vargas.

Due to the changes we are experiencing, you can set up a virtual or phone appointment until we are back in person. Click here to sign-up for an appointment! Please check your school email for follow- up communication.
GCISD Virtual College Visits:
This year we will be promoting Virtual College Visits in the evenings instead of during lunches. Visits will be open to students at BOTH high schools, so please check both calendars to see who is “visiting”. The calendars can be found on the Go Center website as pictured below. Each university will provide their own link for accessing the visit which can be found on the calendar.
Virtual College Visits:
Curious to how you can visit schools virtually and take advantage of their online opportunities? Check out this great resource that links you to each college's virtual experience page! **New Link from previous Panther Pause updates***
You can also visit DARN’s YouTube Channel to catch up on the virtual college fair that they hosted.
There are still opportunities to participate in NACAC’s virtual college fair and the GCISD College Fair (happening October 21, representatives will be “live” for questions).
Scholarships:
Although many local scholarships are not open yet, we encourage you to begin checking the GCISD Scholarship website as this will be actively updated with new deadlines as soon as we receive them. If you have not obtained letters of recommendation, please request them now as most scholarships generally require a minimum of two letters.
Seniors also need to research scholarships that come directly from the colleges/universities to which they are applying. Please reach out to the Go Center if you have any questions about scholarships!
TCC College Access Program:
If you have a possible interest in attending TCC after high school in the Fall of ’21, please know that TCC College Access facilitates the entire TCC registration process and is done during the school day. In order to participate and be included in this process you must complete this interest form questionnaire: http://tinyurl.com/tcc21. You can email Emily.miller@gcisd.net with questions or if you are interested in the program.
We encourage you to come see us (reach out virtually to us) at the Go Center for any questions you may have regarding your post high school plans.

Skyward Attendance
Please be aware that as we move through this unique school year with in-person and remote learners, the way in which our teachers take attendance in Skyward has become much more complex. Therefore, to make better use of instructional time, teachers now have the flexibility to formally enter attendance into Skyward up to a full day after the attendance period.
With that said, it is important for parents to know that if you access Skyward to view your student’s attendance, it is possible the system may show them as being absent for the current day, even if they were present in class or online. Additionally, it is possible that remote learning students may still display as absent up until the following day.
As always, we appreciate your patience and understanding.
A friendly reminder to parents
Grapevine-Colleyville ISD to offer meals FREE
USDA has issued a nationwide waiver, allowing Grapevine-Colleyville ISD to offer meals FREE at no charge through December 2020 at all elementary and middle school campuses and meal bundles at curbside locations.
Beginning on September 22, 2020 Grapevine-Colleyville ISD will begin providing free meals to students as part of the Seamless Summer Option (SSO) program. Sponsored by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA), this program will allow any student in elementary or middle school to receive a free breakfast and lunch meal in the school cafeteria, with the option to purchase a-la-carte items. Additionally, the District will offer meal bundles at no cost available for curbside pick-up that will contain meals for the entire week, including the weekend.
Curbside meals may be picked up on Wednesdays at Grapevine Elementary, Cross Timbers Middle or Grapevine Middle from 4-6 p.m. The meal bundles will include seven breakfast, seven lunches and a choice of chocolate or white ½ pint milk (14 milks will be provided). Heating instructions will be included so that families can prepare the meals at their convenience.
GCISD’s high schools do not participate in the federally funded program and therefore meals will be charged as normal in those cafeterias; however, high school students are able to pick up a meal bundle from one of the curbside locations.
For more information on how the federal program operates please visit www.squaremeals.org or www.fns.usda.gov.
Parents are encouraged to continue filling out the free and reduced application online at www.schoollunchapp.com. The benefits from being approved for free or reduced-price meals, may include discounts for transportation, standardized tests, college application fees and technology fees to name a few. If you have any questions, please email child.nutrition@gcisd.net or call 817-251-5617.

Daily Health Screen Reminder
As we prepare to welcome students on campus beginning Tuesday, September 8, I wanted to remind all parents of the need to pre-screen your student for signs and symptoms associated with COVID-19 before bringing your student to school. The signs and symptoms are to screen for are:
Feeling feverish or a measured temperature greater than or equal to 100.0 degrees Fahrenheit
Loss of taste or smell
Cough
Difficulty breathing
Shortness of breath
Fatigue
Headache
Chills
Sore throat
Congestion or runny nose
Shaking or exaggerated shivering
Significant muscle pain or ache
Diarrhea
Nausea or vomiting
If your child demonstrates any of the above signs or symptoms, they must stay home, and you need to report to the campus nurse the signs or symptoms your child is exhibiting. In the event that your child has a fever, they must be kept home from school until they are fever free for 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medication. Please do not give fever reducing medication and send your child to school. Additionally, please do not send your child to school if they have been exposed to someone with COVID-19, or are test-confirmed with COVID-19.

suicide prevention curriculum
As many of you know, every fall the counseling teams at each secondary school present an evidence-based suicide prevention curriculum called S.O.S. to all students, grades 6-12.
Due to our unusual circumstances this year, we have decided to postpone the S.O.S. presentations, preferring to wait until we can share this critical information in-person.
We do want to share with you how our counselors are continuing to support our students during this time. Counselors are available for students and parents via Webex and phone. Each campus has a form available on their website to request to meet with a counselor. Additionally, counselors are reaching out to students to check in on them and will continue to do so throughout the year. Counselors are prepared to support students both remotely and in person. For students who are returning to school in person, counselors are accessible by going directly to the counseling office, or by requesting an appointment. For students who will continue with remote learning, counselors are accessible by phone or Webex.
In addition to the support provided by our counselors, the counseling page on the GCISD webpage has resources that are available for parents on a variety of topics.
2020 Census
Students and families in GCISD still have an opportunity to participate in the 2020 Census. An accurate representation of our student and family population is important for future federal funding implications. If you have not already done so, please complete the 2020 Census for your family.
