Background Information
Macedonia is a small, landlocked country in eastern Europe. I'm going to talk about it's geography, culture, history, innovation, economics, government and citizenship.
Macedonia Geography
The capital of Macedonia, Skopje is the most populated city, contain 506,926 people living there. There are only five cities in Macedonia that have over 50,000 people living there, Skopje, Bitola, Kumanovo, Prilep, and Tetovo. Macedonia is in the southeastern part of Europe, it is a very mountainous region. The highest point is on Mount Korab, which is located southwest of Skopje and the lowest point is on Vardar River, which runs through Skopje. The climate is mildly continental, which means they have cold, humid winters and hot, dry summers. The highest temperatures in Macedonia have reached 32 degrees celsius and the low is -4 degrees celsius. Most people live in Skopje because the weather is great and there's lots of places to stay if you're traveling. Since Macedonia is a landlocked country, the easiest way to get to and from there is by plane.
Government of Macedonia
Macedonia has a parliamentary democracy as their government, the president is Gjorge Ivanov. The Macedonia naming dispute is the name of the law making body in Macedonia. Macedonia is an unlimited government because people can vote for their future president and government leaders. Macedonia's government is like the United States' because they both have 3 branches of government, a president, and a constitution. However, Macedonia has a higher percentage of women in the national parliament. They are both part of the United Nations.
Economy of Macedonia
The currency of Macedonia is the Macedonian Denar, the most popular Macedonia Denar exchange rate is the MKD to USD rate. MKD stands for Macedonian Denar and USD stands for United States Dollar. Macedonia is the 116th largest export economy in the world, in 2013 Macedonia exported $4.72 billion and imported $6.56 billion. Some top exports of Macedonia include Non-Knit Women's Suits and Raw Tobacco. Some of their top import goods are Refined Petroleum, Platinum, and Cars. The GDP per capita in Macedonia in 2015 was $5,455.6.
Social and Ethnic Groups in Macedonia
The six major ethnic groups in Macedonia are Macedonians, Albanians, Turks, Serbs, Bosniaks, and Gypsies. The Constitution says that they would provide free primary and secondary education. Also, the Law on Primary Education says that all kids from 7 to 15 must attend school for 8 years. Then, the Law on High School Education states that kids from 15 to 19 must attend High School for at least 3 years, depending on the type of school.
Religion and Language in Macedonia
There are three religions that make up the Republic of Macedonia, Eastern Orthodoxy, Islam, and Roman Catholic. Eastern Orthodoxy makes up 64.8%, Islam makes up 33.3%, Roman Catholic makes up 0.3%, and finally the other 1.6% is other religions. There are 7 languages that make up Macedonia, Macedonian, Albanian, Turkish, Romani, Serbian, Bosnian, and Aromanian. Macedonian makes up 66.49% of what people speak, which is the dominant, main language. The Macedonia flag is made up of red and yellow, it reminds me of a sun because there is a red background with a yellow center, as well as yellow rays coming out of the center,
Traditional Holdidays, Festivals, and Food of Macedonia
Saints Cyril and Methodius' Day is a National Holiday celebrated in Macedonia, that honors two saints. In 2016, this holiday would be on Tuesday May 24, 2016. Macedonian food reflects Mediterranean and Middle Eastern influences. As well as Italian, German, and Eastern European. Kanafeh is a famous Macedonian dessert, it is a cheese pastry soaked in a sweet sugar-based syrup. The main ingredients are cheese, sugar, pistachio, rose water, and kaymak. This dessert originated in the Ottoman Empire.
