Dear Parents,
We enjoyed Grandfriends Day on Friday!
English
We will continue reading A Long Walk to Water in class. We are focusing on the Reading Signposts, which help us to analyze what we are reading.
As a reminder, students should be reading on their own every day. In addition to print books and magazines, they have an online subscription to the Detroit Free Press. Students with public library cards can also check out audiobooks on their iPads. They are expected to write a reflection about their current reading every day at the beginning of class.
Math
Last week, students learned how to multiply fractions (lesson 2.3). They also learned how to simplify factors to make multiplication easier. On Thursday, October 12th, students took a mid-chapter quiz. Students who are eligible for a retake will be able to do this on Friday, October 20th. This week, there were 2 homework assignments: page 85(2-13) / page 86(1-6), and page 91(2-11)/page 92(1-6). They are due on Monday, October 16th.
This week, students will be learning how to model fraction division. They will also learn how to estimate quotients. Finally, students will learn how to divide fractions by fractions. Looking ahead, students will work with division with fractions and mixed numbers throughout the month of October.
Science
Social Studies
We will continue learning about the continent of Africa. We will focus on the Five Themes of Geography while learning about the different countries on the African continent.
Band
Students are doing well in class-- please check in with them some time this week or weekend have them play you something! We've been working hard on fundamentals: proper posture and breathing, starting the note correctly, and producing a strong sound. They're off to a great start!
