Math: This week students practiced: using manipulatives to represent two-digit addition, representing two-digit addition with drawings, and solving two-digit addition problems using the vertical method. They continue to work to improve their fluency, with sprints, and their problem solving skills , with application problems. After listening to and/or reading word problems, students figure out which strategy would be the best for the situation. We continue to encourage students to identify the question and to realize that the reason for having more than one strategy is that some strategies work well with certain numbers, and another strategy might be more efficient for a different set of numbers. Students also started solving subtraction problems. Please look through your child’s returned work. Because some students work more quickly than others, you might find some unfinished work. It isn’t always necessary for each student to solve every problem, but there are different skills required for some of the problems, so it’s important that your child has attempted the different types.
Reading: Readers have been noticing how big events cause characters to change. When we notice characters feelings, it helps us understand our characters and the story. During shared reading, we have been reading one book multiple times, each time focusing on a different aspect of the writing (it’s very interesting how readers learn about writing while reading). Students have been noticing how the main character changes throughout the story. We’ve paid attention to the tone of voice a character uses. Readers continue to use Post-its or their reading journals to jot down their thoughts while reading. Ask your child about the character(s) he or she has ‘met’ this week.
Writing: Students continued writing realistic fiction stories. We’ve been noticing how authors show not tell by reading books from the Pinky and Rex series along with other mentor texts (Enemy Pie, Jamaica Tag Along, Koala Lou). Partners have been helping each other by listening to each other’s stories and sharing what they are picturing in their heads while listening. They are also able to offer compliments and suggestions. If a part of the story is confusing, they share ideas about how to ‘fix-up’ a part of the story. We often spend the last few minutes of a lesson listening to one of our classmates share either a part of their story, or time permitting, perhaps the entire story. Some students are working to figure out how to end their story, while others are beginning second or even third stories.
Science: This week was our last week of our Weather Unit. Students visited the science lab to compete in a Meteorologist Marathon where they practiced reading thermometers and rain gauges. They also practiced identifying clouds, weather situations, and wind damage using the Beaufort scale. The week ended with our weather assessment. We look forward to our next social studies unit which will be Qatar Then and Now.

Information From Our Nurses
There are students in your child’s class who have nut allergies. A child with nut allergy can develop mild or severe reactions if they come in contact with the said allergen. Please take note of the following measures:
· Please be considerate of your child’s classmates when sending in snacks (if possible, to avoid sending any nuts or nut products)
· Children should be encouraged to wash their hands before and after lunch, prior to returning to the classroom to avoid any cross-contamination.
· For any special occasions, please be reminded that any food brought in to the class should be nut free.
