A December to Remember
A look back at all the great things from December!
Message from the Principal
Wishing all of you a wonderful holiday season full of love, family, and friends.
I strongly recommend to all of you to make sure your child reads over break. Reading stimulates their imagination and expands their understanding of the world. It helps them develop language and listening skills and prepares them to understand the written word. Here's a quick link that shares 10 benefits to reading. We cannot stress enough the importance of reading for the developmental growth of our kids!
Want a little quiet time in the morning to sip some coffee and relax? Here's a secret from the Schultz household...we have the kids (ages 5 & 7) grab a book, curl up in bed (or a fort they have built!) and read. Meanwhile, mom and dad have a cup of coffee, talk, laugh and enjoy each other's company. Want a little quiet time in the evening? Send the kids to bed a little early. Make it fun! Let them read under the covers with a flashlight! Perhaps you want some quality time with the kids. Snuggle up on the couch and listen to them read, or take turns reading to one another.
Our teachers are doing an amazing job of building our kids stamina to engage in sustained reading. Our 1st graders have been building up their reading strength to 10 minutes! 4th graders are already at a solid 20 minutes of sustained focused reading!
Just like exercising our muscles, we need to exercise our brain. If we skip 10 days of working out, then working out for the first time in 11 days will very challenging! Kids need to exercise their brains over break. Reading is a great workout!!
We will begin STAR testing on January 8th. This will be an opportunity to see the growth in our students from fall to spring. Watch for information about your child's STAR results toward the end of January.
Stay warm & Happy Holidays
Ms. Cassandra Schultz

Compassion
Compassion is showing concern for the well being of others. Students will learn that it is possible to show compassion in big and small ways. Compassion is the foundation of respect, remembering to treat others the way we want to be treated.
Please encourage and demonstrate some ways that families can show compassion:
Give to help others in need. For example: collect canned goods for a local food pantry, donate gently used clothing and toys, send a card of encouragement to someone who needs a little extra boost.
Show respect to people, property, animals, and the environment.
Be kind to those you know and don’t know.
Listen to others.
Be helpful in situations , at home, school and in the community.
What’s important in life is how we treat each other. At our school let’s make compassion an everyday thing!

Christmas Is.....
A big part of our writing this time of year is focused on using sensory details to make our readers really understand what we are writing about. Christmas is all about your senses with the sights, smells, sounds, tastes and feelings that surround this holiday. Here are some wonderful Christmas free writes that are sure to embrace you in the Christmas Spirit from the minds of 4th Graders! Enjoy!

Student Council Food Drive
Garfield's Student Council held a Holiday Food Drive to help brighten the holidays of those in need! Together, Garfield students and staff collected 280 food items that were donated to the Salvation Army. Thank you to everyone who opened their hearts and contributed to the food drive! Once again, we have proven that kids can make a HUGE difference and impact in their community! Way to go, Eagles!

WE ARE NEED OF YOUR HELP PLEASE
Are you cleaning out your children's closet before Christmas? Do you usually take things to Goodwill?
We are asking for your help. At times, some students are in need of a pair of pants, a shirt, a sweatshirt, a coat or snowpants. We have been fortunate in the past to be able to provide these items to our students.
At this time we are running low on sweatpants, leggings, & snowpants for girls. These work great as they can accommodate more sizes.
If you have any of these items, we would appreciate any donations you could help us with. Children's sizes ranging from a 5-14.
Thank you for your help.
If you have any questions please contact Mrs. Cunningham in the office.
