Mrs. Greene's 3rd Grade
March 6, 2020
Welcome March...
All Third Graders in the state of Indiana are required to take the iREADS test. The test is given on the computer. The test will be given the week of March 16. There is a day of practice tests (required by the state) and one day of the actual test. Here is the schedule:
- Monday, March 16 - 8:45 - 9:30 Practice Test
- Tuesday, March 17 - Make up Practice Tests if needed
- Wednesday, March 18 - 8:45-10:00 Test Segments 1 and 2
- Thursday, March 19 - 8:45 - 9:30 Test Segment 3
- Friday, March 20 - Make up Tests if needed
Hopefully you saw the information that came home in your child's backpack about our donation to the Hamilton County Humane Society. The students are super excited about it! We will begin accepting donations on Monday, March 9. I attached a copy of the letter to this newsletter (bottom).
We continue to work on SSL projects. Some students really want to work on this at home. This is designed to be an at-school activity. If your child wants to do a little research or spend time digging into their topic, that is fine. The project must be completed at school, though.
That's all I have for now...

Amazing Things I Saw and Heard in Room 9...
- Ben wrote an essay that he was not proud of and asked me if he could start over. I love it when students value producing excellent work!
- Max was recognized several times this week for his excellent listening!
- Phoebe was so excited about a math skill she learned in math class that she went home and showed her parents the new skill. That prompted her parents to give her some additional challenging problems using the skill.
- Aahan is working so hard on his writing skills. This week he produced a piece that showed amazing growth.
- Sophie persevered through a tough week - she's had trouble sleeping and came to school very sleepy a few days. It really caught up with her, but she is one tough cookie and had a successful week!
WOW!!! I realize I have several more good news items to share, so --- I'll wait and share them next week!
Next Week in Room 9
Reading: Book Clubs!!
- We will wrap up Book Clubs next Friday, March 13.
- The students made a plan on how they were going to finish their book with only one short week left.
Math: Unit 7 - Fractions
- Fractions on a Number Line will be our focus all next week. We have worked on fractions of a whole shape (circle, rectangle). Fractions on a number line is challenging and spending extra time building this foundational skill pays off later!
- Please encourage your child to continue practicing their multiplication facts or their addition/subtraction/multiplication facts using xtramath.org
Writing: Constructed Response Writing
We will work on reading an article and writing a response to a question about the article citing evidence from the text to support thinking. This is difficult. It will challenge the students! I told the class today that if they work extremely hard on this long, difficult task, I will reward them by allowing them to bring in a snack and headphones to listen to music next Friday during Writing. They were thrilled!
Word Study - Word Study - Grammar
- Reviewing morphology that we have learned up to this point.
- Nouns, verbs, adjectives, pronouns
Science: Sound
