Christmas Party Information:
Monday, December 18th
Christmas parties have been set for Monday, December 18th from 11:00-12:00. Lunch and recess will be at regular times. Each child will be given a stocking and students may bring stocking stuffers (pencils, erasers, highlighters, candy, toys, etc.) to add to each stocking. Mrs. Curtright's homeroom has 24 students and Mrs. Foster's homeroom has 25 students. Only send stocking stuffers for your child's homeroom. Parents may also send snacks (cupcakes, cookies, chips, etc.) for the party. You may be contacted by the homeroom parent to send specific items for the party.
Monday is a regular dismissal day.
Tuesday, December 19th
Tuesday is Pajama Day! Students may wear their pajamas to school and bring slippers or socks to wear in the classroom. Please make sure your child wears regular shoes to school because they will need them for restrooms, cafeteria, and recess.
Tuesday is a 2:00 dismissal day.
Math, Science, and Social Studies
We will begin working on our 8 facts in math fluency this week. This is where students begin to have more difficulty so please make sure they are working on these facts at home. Continue to work with your child on their math facts each night. The fact cards are in your child's pencil pouch. Also, continue to work on all previous facts: 1's through 6's, 9's, 10's, and 11's. We will have our accuracy check on the 8 facts next Friday.
Science-We had a great week in Science last week with our "Secret of Flight" unit. We were so excited to have Jeremy Holloway come to visit and talk to our students about his job as a pilot. We look forward to him coming back again in January and February. This week we will wrap up our unit on flight and transition into Social Studies.
Social Studies-Later in the week we will transition into Social Studies. We will begin our 3 branches of government unit. We will start with the Executive Branch. Students will learn key figures in each branch, their main responsibilities, and where they perform their jobs.
Reading, Writing, and Word Study
Reading--We will be continuing our text structures boot camp this week. We will have a text structures games day on Thursday and we will take a short quiz on Friday over the five non fiction text structures (problem & solution, sequence, compare & contrast, cause & effect, and description). Students will have a study sheet coming home tomorrow that they can look over to help remind themselves.
Reminder--all students are expected to have a "grade appropriate" book to read in class every day. (This means a chapter book or a longer non-fiction selection--not Where's Waldo or a joke book). We do classroom library check in and out each Tuesday and Friday, and each class has a weekly trip to the school library.
Writing--We will wrap up our research and we will begin working on our magazines to present our information learned. STudents will be working in their small groups to create a magazine with five sections (one written in each of the non fiction text structures). We will be working in class daily on this.
