PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Dear Diegueño Families,
The California Healthy Youth Act (CHYA) requires that comprehensive sexual health education and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) prevention education be taught to students in California middle and high schools. The purpose of this instruction is to:
- Provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to protect their sexual and reproductive health from HIV and other sexually transmitted infections and unintended pregnancy.
- Provide students with the knowledge and skills they need to develop healthy attitudes concerning adolescent growth and development, body image, gender, sexual orientation, relationships, marriage, and family.
- Promote understanding of sexuality as a normal part of human development.
- Ensure students receive integrated, comprehensive, accurate, and unbiased sexual health and HIV prevention instruction and provide educators with clear tools and guidance to accomplish that end.
- Provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to have healthy, positive, and safe relationships and behaviors.
If you want to learn more, please join me and several of Diegueño's science teachers on Monday, April 8 from 8:45 - 9:30 AM in the Learning Commons. Additional information will also be forthcoming in an email this Friday.
Kindly,
Celeste Barnette, Ed.D.

PTSA 90s Dance Party Tickets - On Sale NOW!!
We are beyond blessed to have such a generous PTSA this year. The tremendous support you have given has enabled us to dramatically expand services, both inside of the classroom and on the campus-at-large. We are still raising money to take this year's 8th grade promotion (graduation) celebration to a whole new level. Donations will also support our Counseling and Student Support Services and Visual and Performing Arts elective programs.
The best way you can support us is to buy your tickets for the 90s Dance Party on Friday, April 26. Tickets are only $50 and your ticket price will include tacos, drinks, and a hella good LIVE 90s band. If you aren't able to attend the event, you can still support our school by making a donation or sponsoring a teacher to attend! Please help us spread the word to families that don't always check this newsletter.

Spring Break Traffic Safety Tips
During spring break, you may notice more kids, teens and families walking and biking around Carlsbad. Here are some tips to help everyone stay safe on the road.
- Talk to your students about the rules of the road, including rules for pedestrians and bicyclists and Carlsbad-specific e-bike rules.
- Anyone under 18 is legally required to wear a helmet while riding a bike. Make sure your student’s helmet fits properly.
- Eliminate distractions. Put your phone away when walking, driving or biking.
- When driving, slow down and allow extra time to get where you need to go.
- Before you head out, remember to review the City of Carlsbad's map of major city construction projects that could impact traffic along your route.
