What is sodium?
Sodium is a chemical element with symbol Na and atomic number 11. It is a soft, silver-white, highly reactive element.
Sodium regulates the total amount of water in the body and the transmission of sodium into and out of individual cells also plays a role in critical body functions. Sodium attracts and holds water, so the sodium in the blood helps maintain the liquid portion of the blood. On the other hand, if you consume too much sodium, your body may hold onto extra water, increasing the volume of your blood. Sodium was first discovered in 1807 by Humphry Davy.
