Message From Principal Webb
Dear Longhorn families,
Welcome to the new school year! This is my weekly family newsletter. It is the main form of communication and news.It was so amazing to see all our families and students back for Back to School Night! A BIG THANK YOU TO THE PTA FOR THEIR SUPPORT AND TREATS!
We have had many inquiries about our safety procedures. We will continue to encourage mask-wearing and will be sanitizing and socially distancing as much as possible. The lunchroom will be at half capacity as well. We will have lunch outside whenever possible!
To help slow the spread of COVID-19, the Iowa City Community School District strongly encourages universal indoor mask use for all teachers, staff, students, and visitors to our schools, regardless of vaccination status. This is based on guidance from the CDC. In addition, the President’s Executive Order on domestic transportation requires students and staff to wear a face-covering while on a school bus or while utilizing other District-provided transportation.
In addition, the District strongly encourages eligible individuals to get the COVID-19 vaccine. For individuals 12 years of age and older who have not yet received the COVID-19 vaccine, this vaccine locator may be used to find a provider near you.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Webb

Before and After School Plans
Some students choose to walk to and from school, get dropped off/picked up by a parent in a car or some children are eligible for busing.
If your child eats breakfast at school they should arrive around 7:40.
Parking spaces are at a minimum and so I encourage all students who need to be dropped off to use the carline route. Carline is for students who (before and after school) will get dropped off by parents and picked up by parents (that are not parking and getting out of the vehicles).
If your child is getting picked up after school by carline, they will go to the gym and staff will call them by their name to exit the North doors. Please have your green(yellow) sheet in your car window so we know who to call out to carline in a timely manner.
Students who are getting picked up (by parents that park on the street and walk to pick up students) or students who are walking/riding bikes home will exit out of their team doors.
KEY (before and after school program) will enter and exit from the North door.
Only parents/students who need to visit the office will enter the main (west side) door.
Reminder- students should not arrive before 7:40 am.- there is no supervision before this time.
Breakfast is served from 7:40-7:55 and those students eating breakfast that are not in the before and after school program will enter through the North door (door 3)as well.
District News:
Dear Families,
We are excited to announce that the USDA has extended our waiver allowing us to continue to offer free meals to all students through the 2021-22 school year. All meals, whether served in schools or at Grab & Go sites, are free. Please review the USDA’s public release for free school meals for more information.
While meals are currently free for all students under this waiver, it is critical that families still complete the Free and Reduced Application. The Free and Reduced Application ensures that eligible families have access to qualifying benefits such as P-EBT Cards and reduced transportation costs. The application must be completed each year as federal income guidelines change. Please be aware that even if you applied last year, you need to reapply again as soon as possible, to prevent a potential loss in benefits.
Beginning August 23, 2021, the Grab & Go meal program will resume. Meals will be served on school days from noon-1:00 pm at the following locations:
- Hills Elementary
- North Central Junior High
- Northwest Junior High
- South East Junior High
Meet our Student Family Advocate (SFA): Caitlin Hauskins
I am extremely pumped to be joining the Longfellow community working as the Student Family Advocate! For the past four years, I served Tate High School as the Student Advisory Center Coordinator. I have a passion for building relationships, making rad playlists, reading, yoga and spending time with my two kiddos and husband. We love to be outside and go on scooter rides down giant hills! I am so excited to help students and their families break down any barriers that make attending school more challenging.

Longfellow Elementary stands with all people of color in the fight against racial injustice and inequality. We all deserve to be safe and secure. Longfellow Elementary, as part of the Iowa City Community School District, will not tolerate racism, hate, and other discriminatory acts. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. famously said that, “injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” We will work hard to not let today’s injustice stop us from creating a better tomorrow for our school community. Please know that even though it is summer, you can reach out anytime.
