Fulton Science Academy
INNOVATION, EXCELLENCE, CHARACTER
WEEKLY NEWSLETTER October 10, 2016
Greetings to our FSA Friends and Families,
It's been another productive week here at FSA! Our students are jumping for joy today, and for good reason...
The Technology Association of Georgia (TAG) and the TAG Education Collaborative (TAG-Ed) recently announced that Fulton Science Academy Private School was named a finalist in two categories of the 2016 Georgia STEM Education Awards. Our school was selected from more than 130 nominees and is being recognized in both the middle school and extracurricular categories.
Week in and week out, our children spend countless hours supporting various academic teams here. Their love of learning is infectious, so to see their efforts recognized in such a special way is very meaningful. Award winners will be announced at an awards ceremony held at the Loudermilk Center on November 4.
In addition to news about the TAG awards, I'd also like to extend a personal note of thanks to so many of our incredible parents who volunteer time and talent to our school on a consistent basis. I hope it goes without saying how much your efforts are recognized and appreciated. Thank you for all you do!
Gratefully,
Kenan Sener

Club and dismissal reminder
As such, our teachers spend time planning and preparing for our clubs every week, many of which have wait lists.
Please respect those teachers who report that it can be both disruptive and disheartening when students are asked to leave during club time; some students every week.
Attendance at clubs is recorded. Students who misbehave during club time, are repeatedly absent, or who depart clubs early on a repeated basis will have their name(s) removed from the roster.
We therefore kindly request that all students are picked up during carpool starting at either 3:30 p.m. or 4:20 p.m. Thank you for your cooperation.
October is Anti-Bullying Month
October is National Bullying Prevention Month. Last week, teachers (with support from Guidance Counselor, Ms. Kelly) learned the benefits of being a UPSTANDER instead of a BYSTANDER.
Talking points that we encourage you to review with your child at home included:
Bystanders are kids and teens who witness bullying and cyberbullying in action, who stand by and watch, who videotape it and make it viral ... and WHO DO AND SAY NOTHING.
Very often they don’t know what to do. They’re afraid of retaliation or fear that their own group will exclude them for helping an outsider.
When you’re a bystander it’s important to know that by doing nothing you are sending a message to the bully that their behavior is acceptable.
It isn’t!
And that’s not a message you want to send, nor is it a message you would want someone to send if you were a victim.
Yes, it is scary to directly confront a bully and sometimes it can mean taking a big risk.
STAND UP! Be a UPSTANDER!!
Whether you know the victim or not, there are things that you as a bystander can safely do to support the victim:
- Don't laugh
- Don't encourage the bully in any way
- Stay at a safe distance and help the target get away
- Don’t become an "audience" for the bully
- Reach out in friendship
- Help the victim in any way you can
- Support the victim in private
- If you notice someone being isolated from others, invite them to join you
- Include the victim in some of your activities
- Tell an adult
There is strength in numbers. Every school and every community have more caring kids than bullies.
If you are NOT part of the solution, you ARE part of the problem!
Unite, be empowered and speak out against bullying and cyberbullying!
Together, you can STOMP Out Bullying – but only if you do something!
When you see someone being bullied and/or cyberbullied and you help them ... you stop being a bystander and become an upstander!
STAND UP for others! Be a Hero! Be a leader and STOMP Out Bullying!
It's up to you ... It's up to all of us! You can change anything you want -- Why not STAND UP and change the way bullies treat their targets!

Service Learning Club TO Adopt "Blessings in a BackPack" Outreach Initiative Later this Fall
Did you know that one in seven people in the metro-Atlanta area turns to food banks for help feeding themselves and their families? Many families do not have the means to provide for their basic food needs. In fact, more than 164,000 children right here in the metro Atlanta area are afflicted by this reality. It’s heartbreaking.
Childhood hunger is often considered an “invisible problem” because few know who suffers from inadequate food supply, and those in need often do a good job of hiding it.
Because #fsacares, the FSA Service Learning Clubs want to help solve the problem of childhood hunger. We are partnering with a local organization, Blessings in a Backpack, to help feed some of the children in our community who lack proper food and nutrition.
Beginning later this fall, FSA homerooms will be invited to donate individual, serving-sized, non-perishable items for a food drive to benefit this cause. This will be a wonderful way to spend the time leading up to winter breaking making a positive difference in the lives of countless children who need us in our own surrounding areas.
The month of September has been a busy one; we saw a powerful example of how FSA CARES! Let’s open our hearts to hungry children this holiday season and continue to make a positive difference in our community. Please look for additional information in upcoming newsletters. Thank you!
October's Character Ed Theme is Citizenship.
Citizenship is:
1. Being responsible and respectful to people, animals, and the environment.
2. Caring about your community and country.
3. Being informed about the needs of your school and community.
4. Doing your best to make your home, school, and community a better place.
How can we incorporate this theme throughout the school this month? We can encourage students to keep our campus clean inside and outside by picking up trash when they see it, respecting the rules of the school and community, raising their hands in class, helping others in need, learning about the candidates running for presidency, and participating in activities that improve their community.

Pre-K Celebrates Cultural Day
Upper Elementary Orchestra Update
Orchestra club has been a new adventure for our 3rd–5th grade students. Participants are learning how to play their instruments in an ensemble setting for the very first time. You’ll hear the music fundamentals being rehearsed as you walk by Dr. Hawk’s room on Monday afternoons.
Class typically begins with a posture refresher and a session on learning how to tune. Next, it’s technique time. Students have to find the correct spot for their fingers while saying note names. Our fundamentals exercises have included scales, arpeggios, and rhythm exercises.
Playing together has been our most recent focus. Students are now creating “harmony” with their scale exercises. We must break into smaller groups and play together at different times to make it happen – the pianists begin, then the cellos join, followed by the violins and violas.
Orchestra Club students are working hard and having fun. It won’t be long before we’ll begin looking at a real piece of music!
KINDERGARTEN HANDS ON SCIENCE CLUB WITH MRS. IRSHADULLAH!
Hands on Science by Mrs. Irshadullah is so much fun! Every week, students do hands-on activities and learn about science. Science is all around us every day and the experiments promote learning and scientific awareness.
The students have learned what happens when vinegar mixes with baking soda, sink, and float experiment, what happens when primary colors mix with the water traveling experiment to name a few. We can't wait for more experiments to do in upcoming weeks!

FSA Home Visit Information
Ms. Cox, Mrs. Hewett, and Mr. Sanal visited Aiden M. for a home visit on Saturday. They report having a wonderful time with Aiden and his family!
FSA home visits offer a unique experience for both our teachers and families. If you haven't yet registered, we encourage you to please consider it.
Simply email junal@fultonscienceacademy.org with some suggested dates/times, as well as your students' name(s) and homeroom assignments. Ms. Unal will be in touch to confirm final details.
Home visits are a casual way for your child to spend time with his/her teacher in the comfort of their home. Teachers enjoy having a chance to see children in this comfortable environment, doing whatever makes them most happy and spend time with children and their parents outside of a regular school day.
So far, home visits have been very well received. We thank everyone who has made this program such a special and successful part of FSA.

FSA's A-Z Directory Needs Your Input
Hello, parents!
I'm writing to ask that you please check your email for information concerning the A to Z directory. This service is being provided by the school's Mustang Support Organization and provides immediate access to our student and family information.
To ensure this service is fully functional, please log into the A-Z Directories using information sent to you previously via email and verify your contact information. All data verification needs to occur prior to Sept 29th.
An email was sent to you earlier from the Mustang Support Organization with details about how to register. Please check your email to retrieve this email if necessary.
MSO Activity Fees Now Due
The A-Z Directory, along with many other programs and services coordinated by the MSO, helps our school enjoy the quick rewards of modern technology.
With that said, our ability to provide services such as these that are not included in your child's tuition hinges upon every family paying their child's mandatory MSO fee. This fee is $100 per student for the entire school year.
If you have not yet paid your child's activity fee, please do so. These funds are critical in providing many services and opportunities for our students. If you have already paid, thank you!
As always, please direct questions and comments to me directly. Checks can be delivered to the front office made out to the "Mustang Support Organization." You can also pay online by clicking here and marking "MSO" in the purpose area.
Thank you for your support.
Sincerely,
Amanda Crigler

SCHOOL LUNCH PROGRAM
APPLY NOW FOR YOUR 2017 TAX CREDIT
Dear FSA Families,
We are pleased to announce details surrounding the GA Tax Credit Scholarship Program. Applications to participate are being accepted now, and we hope you will choose to participate.
This program provides an opportunity for taxpayers to redirect Georgia tax dollars and, in turn, provide financial aid assistance to FSA students. We would greatly appreciate it if you would please apply and choose Fulton Science Academy Private School as your designated school.
Please also inform your friends, co-workers, and relatives who live in Georgia; they can also participate and help support our school.
How can this tax credit benefit both Fulton Science Academy Private School and myself?
Under this law, you can redirect a portion of your Georgia income tax to provide financial aid assistance to FSA students based upon need. You will receive a tax credit on your state income taxes and a charitable deduction on your federal incomes taxes for the amount of your contribution. For married couples filing jointly, the maximum tax credit-eligible contribution is $2,500 ($1,000 as an individual).
How do I participate in the program?
It’s easy. All you have to do is complete our easy paperless process, and Apogee will submit the paperwork on your behalf. Apogee will process your approval notice within 30 days. Once the approval notice is received, please send your payment by check or pay online within 60 days of your approval date.
Is there a limit regarding how much I can give each year?
Yes, the amount you can give is limited by your tax filing status:
- Married Filing Jointly: Maximum of $2,500
- Individual Filer: Maximum of $1,000
- Married Filing Separately: Maximum of $1,250
- Individuals who receive pass-through income can contribute up to $10k
- C-Corporation: Up to 75% of GA tax liability
Can I direct my contribution to help a specific student?
Although we understand why it would be ideal to designate specific recipients, this is not possible. Apogee does not accept donations that are allocated for specific individuals. Donors would lose their ability to receive a charitable contribution, as well as the Georgia tax credit.
Apogee is a 501c3 non-profit organization and, as such, is bound first and foremost by the rules and regulations governing this special status. As a 501c3, Apogee is not permitted to accept any donations directed to a specific individual. To do so would put Apogee’s non-profit status in jeopardy and, in turn, its SSO status in jeopardy.
Who or what is Apogee?
Apogee Scholarship Fund is a state registered SSO (Student Scholarship Organization) as well as a 501c3 non-profit organization whose primary functions are to facilitate the process of distributing tax credits in exchange for donations and to disburse those funds for private school tuition scholarships.
"Apogee" (ap-uh-jee) is defined as the highest point (typically of an arc). To this end, Apogee strives to help children reach their highest educational potential.
How do I know what my GA tax liability is?
Your GA tax liability is typically 6% of your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI). You can also look at Line 18 of your GA tax return (Form 500) to learn your GA tax liability.
Why should I give now?
The State has placed a yearly cap on the amount of credit available. That amount is $58 million. That means that every school, every taxpayer, and every corporation in GA is drawing from the exact same pool of credits.
Once the funds are distributed, interested agencies must wait until the following year to participate in the program. Once funds are deposited, they are immediately available to assist families who want the best educational choice for their children.
Please note: The yearly cap is generally met on the very first day of January; we expect this trend to continue until the cap is raised beyond the $58 million. For this reason, it is strongly encouraged that you please submit your application as soon as possible to be considered for approval.
Can I reduce my quarterly estimated tax payments by the amount I donate?
This is a great opportunity to write the check to support education instead of paying that portion of estimated taxes. Please ask your accountant to reduce your quarterly estimated tax payment by the amount of your contribution. This will reduce each of your quarterly payments by 25% of the amount you intend to contribute.
What happens if my donation exceeds my tax liability?
The tax credit is a “non-refundable” credit. This means you cannot receive a refund for any more than your GA tax liability. Any excess credit beyond your tax liability can be carried forward for up to five years.
Do I have to include my check with my donation package when mailing to Apogee?
No. Apogee cannot accept payments prior to January 1. Since the vast majority of applications received are early applications, payment should be made after approval has been secured. Payment must be madewithin 60 days of approval.
What is Apogee's Tax ID Number?
FEIN: 26-2693572
Is this donation a charitable deduction on my Federal return in addition to the credit?
Yes. Because of the 501c3 status, you are eligible to receive a Federal Charitable Deduction for the amount of your contribution. The law does require that you increase your State income by the amount of your Charitable Deduction on your Federal return (donation amount).
Can Apogee help me understand how this credit will affect my specific tax situation?
Yes. Apogee is well versed in the specifics of how this credit affects most tax scenarios and is happy to offer guidance regarding how this credit is related to your specific tax situation.
As always, we also suggest that you please consult your personal tax advisor, as they will have the best understanding of your specific tax situation.
How do I get started?
Simply log onto http://www.apogee123.org.
