Senior English, Junior CCR, and other MC news
Update #13: 3.2.15
Progress Reports
Chris is sending these out to the professors this week; we will pass on the feedback as it is received to both students and parents.
Career Day
Our first Career Day is this week during our advisory period (12:30-1:30):
3/4 Tech/Entrepreneur
3/11 Arts/Legal & Political/Medical
3/18 Cybersecurity
Special thanks to Alison for organizing this and finding guest speakers!
Juniors
We strongly encourage all juniors to prepare for college admissions by taking required entrance tests at the end of their junior year. There will be three opportunities to take these tests in the fall of senior year, as well.
Register online using the home school ID (Carlmont 050270, M-A 050170, Sequoia 052605, Woodside 053808).
Fee waivers are available at the home high school in the College and Career Center -- these not only waive the fees for the tests, but will also waive application fees for UC and CSU next year, so it is worth it to ask if you may qualify!
Be sure to remember SAT/ACT account login information, as it will be needed during the college application process.
Wondering which to take? The difference between the ACT and SAT and ACT vs SAT
We suggest the June test dates, as they fall after spring finals and before the summer session starts.
· To test on April 18th, registration deadline is March 13, 2015
· To test on June 13th, registration deadline is May 8, 2015
· To test on March 14th, registration deadline is February 13, 2015
· To test on May 2nd, registration deadline is April 6, 2015
There are practice tests in the CCR view folder; also check out Khan Academy SAT prep.

Course Updates
JUNIORS
- English III: Students are trying their hand at creative writing and reading Catcher in the Rye.
- US History: Students are finishing up their study of the Roaring 20's and moving on to the 30's.
- CCR 1: Students should be wrapping up their college research and scheduling a time to share their findings with parents. They should have a total of 11 colleges or universities that they've looked at online; they will be organizing these into reach, safety, and target categories, and then discussing options with parents.
SENIORS
- English IV: 1984 is what they are reading now (don't worry - we'll read something besides dystopias after spring break).
- Government: Students are finishing up their study of free speech and moving on to political parties
- CCR 2: Students are continuing their work on a period-long senior presentation for their class, and a contributing project of their choice, such as creating the MC yearbook, planning graduation, designing new MC marketing materials, or creating a senior class video.

“Distracted Driving Parent Workshop” with Impact Teen Drivers (California Highway Patrol)

Automobile collisions are the leading cause of death for our nation's teens. The overwhelming majority of these crashes are caused by inexperience or distractions, not "thrill-seeking" or deliberate risk-taking. Teens drivers are at the highest risk: the crash rate (per mile driven) for 16 years olds is four times that of adults.
In this workshop, you will learn about:
- Strategies to keep your teens safe on the road
- Graduated Drivers Licensing (GDL) laws
- The Rules of the Road for teen drivers
- How YOU can stop the #1 killer of teens in America--reckless and distracted driving
Since 2007, Impact Teen Drivers has emerged as a leading nonprofit organization dedicated to reversing the pervasive yet 100% preventable crisis of "distracted driving." Impact's mission is to change the culture of teen driving, thereby saving lives in this and future generations of drivers.

“Where You Go Is Not Who You'll Be: An Antidote to the College Admission Mania” with Frank Bruni, New York Times Columnist and Bestselling Author

Over the last few decades, Americans have turned college admissions into a stressful and occasionally devastating rite of passage, preceded by test prep, tutors, all kinds of rankings and a conviction among too many young people that their futures will be determined and their worth established by which schools say "yes" and which say "no."
That belief is wrong. And in Where You Go Is Not Who You’ll Be, Bruni explains why, giving students and their parents a new outlook on this brutal, deeply flawed competition and a path out of the anxiety that it provokes.
Frank Bruni has been an Op-Ed columnist for The New York Times since June 2011, focusing on a range of subjects including higher education.
