Springing Forward: A Season of Growth and Engagement Opportunities in GMSD
As we conclude the last week of the third quarter, I hope each of you is looking forward to a restful Spring Break next week. It's a time to recharge, reflect, and prepare for the exciting opportunities that lie ahead.
Looking forward, GMSD is on the cusp of something significant. We are in the process of crafting a new strategic plan, and your insights are invaluable. After Spring Break, we'll seek your input on key questions that will guide our district's future direction.
We invite you to explore new horizons, whether through the discipline of archery or the culinary delights crafted by our students. Marvel at production photos of Spring musicals and check out this week's Staff Spotlight. Or, find out what GMSD is doing to prepare for the total eclipse in April.
Lastly, don't miss tomorrow afternoon's Spring Signing event at HHS, celebrating our athletes' next steps in their sports careers.
We'll reconvene with GMSDinFocus on March 25th.
Let's continue to stay focused on what truly matters – our students.
Jason Manuel,
Superintendent
Last week, the Germantown Board of Education applauded our All-State musicians for their exceptional musicianship, highlighting the countless hours of practice and hard work they had invested. Similarly, we celebrated our visual artists, specifically the Scholastic Award Gold Key Winners from Houston High School, who had distinguished themselves at the state level and were set to represent Tennessee on the national stage.

After Spring Break, GMSD wants to know what you'd like to see in our schools!
In other Board news, GMSD is on the brink of something big. We're crafting our new strategic plan and your insight is crucial. After spring break, we’re calling on you—our parents, students, staff, and community members—to answer four pivotal questions. What does GMSD do well that it should continue doing? How could we improve? What is our greatest responsibility outside of the state mandated curriculum? And, what would you like to see initiated in the future? Your feedback will shape our journey forward. Look for the link to go live when we return from Spring Break.
4F Design: Meet the architects behind the Houston High School Master Plan
The Germantown Municipal School District is thrilled to announce its collaboration with 4F Design to bring transformative updates to Houston High School. Notably, 4F Design is returning to its roots with this partnership, as they were part of the original team that designed the school back in 1989. This collaboration is seen as a golden opportunity to transition the school into the next era of educational excellence.
4F Design has a remarkable track record of creating innovative learning spaces, as seen in their recent projects at Collierville High School, Christian Brothers High School, St. Mary's Episcopal School, and the notably impressive renovation at Bartlett High School. Their expertise in blending aesthetics with functionality has resulted in stunning educational environments that inspire both students and teachers alike.
As we continue to highlight one aspect of the plan each week, you might be wondering what this image depicts along the front of the school. By the request of the academic subcommittee, 4F Design have included a modern-day media center/lecture hall. This space is not only a feast for the eyes for those passing by on Wolf River Boulevard but also a versatile area designed to accommodate guest speakers, multi-class meet-ups, clubs, and various student activities. Moreover, the center serves as an exceptional venue for community events.
Adjacent to this inviting common space, a new two-story academic wing is set to address the ever-evolving needs of science and technology education.
GMSD Prepares for the Celestial Spectacle of the Year: The Total Solar Eclipse
On April 8th, the Germantown Municipal School District will be abuzz with excitement over a celestial event that promises to turn day into night— a total solar eclipse. This astronomical phenomenon occurs when the moon positions itself directly between the Earth and the sun, casting a shadow over the Earth and momentarily causing us into partial darkness during the day.
Understanding the significance and educational value of this rare event, GMSD has taken proactive steps to ensure that all students can safely enjoy this awe-inspiring spectacle. The district has secured special glasses for all students, designed to protect their eyes while they witness the moon's shadow passing over the sun.
Traveling to see the eclipse? For those families planning to step outside of Memphis to experience the totality of the eclipse—a moment when the moon completely obscures the sun, revealing the sun's corona—GMSD is offering support. Recognizing the unique opportunity this event presents for a hands-on learning experience, the district encourages interested families to reach out to their school principal to request an excused absence for their children.

Second Phase of Dogwood Road Reclamation Project Underway
On February 26, the City’s contractor began the second phase of the pavement reclamation project along Dogwood Road, from Birchton Drive to Elm Row Drive. The process involves milling away and recycling the existing asphalt, pulverizing and adding a cementitious material to the depth of 10 inches, then using large compaction equipment to create a base layer to ensure a stable road bed. After a seven day cure time, a layer of base asphalt will be installed then finished with a layer of surface asphalt.
Over the years, this roadway has experienced surface failures, which require frequent asphalt overlays to keep it in good shape. The full-depth reclamation of the roadway base and asphalt layers will result in a longer lasting and safer roadway. The portion of Dogwood Road from Birchton Drive to Elm Row Drive, is the second of four phases of reclamation that will be completed along Dogwood Road. A third and fourth phase of the reclamation project is planned to cover the remainder of Dogwood Road to Forest Hill Irene Road.
This phase of the roadway work is expected to last approximately two months, weather permitting. While one side of the road is stabilized and paved, all traffic will be diverted to the other side of the road and vice versa. Two way traffic will be maintained throughout the duration of the project. In addition, access to the private driveways will be maintained. Solid waste, recycling and yard waste collections will also continue as scheduled for residents along the project site.
Motorists are encouraged to choose an alternate route while this project is underway.
