Elementary Students Celebrate the Environment
April celebrates Earth Day and Arbor Day. It is a perfect time for elementary students to focus on caring for the environment. Through a variety of activities, students learned important environmental issues and science concepts.
At Booth Free School, students planted seeds and explored many Earth-themed books. They learned the importance to composting and were inspired by engaging videos. As a result, several classes developed persuasive writing pieces to convince others to start composting.
Burnham School focused on recycling and the process of how a bottle goes from the recycling bin to the recycling plant and then turned into a toy. Students created posters reminding their friends about the importance of recycling. Students read about the dangers of throwing away plastic bags. They learned that sometimes plastic bags end up in the ocean and sea turtles mistake them for jellyfish. Students learned that baby sea turtles can get caught in a plastic bag and drown from the weight of the bag.
At Washington Primary School, students participated in a variety of workshop activities focused on plant life cycle, pollination, and community gardening. Outdoor visits from Flanders Nature Center, White Memorial Conservation Center, and Judea Garden helped students explore different types of seeds, pollinators, and the importance of having a community garden. Students participated in read alouds supporting conservation efforts. Students planted squash, cucumbers, basil and other plants to contribute to the Judea Garden. They created moth decoys to serve as natural deterrents for garden pests. To culminate the week's activities, students created signs with environmental pledges and important learnings that were posted along the Shepaug Riverwalk for families and community members to enjoy.
Senior Project Spotlight
Tyler White - My Performer’s Journey
Tyler White continued his passion for acting and performing by taking on difficult challenges, made harder by the COVID-19 pandemic. Tyler appeared in two films, Utgard Loki and Stalker’s Prey 3, as well as community and school theater performances. He said it was hard for actors to adjust, because wearing masks and socially distancing requires changes in how performers speak and show emotion.
Tyler and his acting colleagues adapted ways to perform within health safety guidelines by changing the fall play to a monologue style and holding the event outside. He took a class at Fineline Theater Arts to improve on long paragraph monologues. Tyler also learned how to conduct interviews. He applied those skills in conversations with professional and student actors, and directors. Tyler expressed surprise at how much he enjoyed the interview component of his project. He hopes to continue working in theater and film in his life after Shepaug.
