Deer Families
Deer Hill School News . October 11, 2019
Dear Deer Hill Families,
October is well under way, and our weather can attest to that! At Deer Hill routines have been established, fall assessments have been completed, and we have begun our academic programs in earnest while continuing to build relationships within our school community. Teachers are looking forward to upcoming parent conferences – they are such a valuable opportunity to review progress to date and set shared goals. Thank you so much for your ongoing partnership. We appreciate you!
All the best,
Alex Sullivan

Columbus Day Perspectives
As we look toward the Columbus Day holiday with an eye toward a three-day weekend, 4th graders at Deer Hill have been using historical literature and their critical thinking skills to examine this point in history from multiple perspectives. In addition to the “ship” perspective that has long been presented in history books, 4th graders are also considering the “shore” perspective. How was Columbus’ arrival perceived from the viewpoint of the peoples who had long called this land home? What was the impact of his arrival on the trajectory of their story in contrast to that of the European population? After identifying their personal opinions, 4th graders are currently engaged in a letter writing campaign to leaders at all levels from our district to the Governor with the goal of communicating their views on whether this is a holiday we should preserve or abandon. What a great topic of conversation around the dinner table this weekend. . . what thoughts do members of your family have?
3rd Grade History Tea
This Thursday there were many visitors to Deer Hill during 3rd grade’s History Tea. Each classroom welcomed a variety of visitors including Grandmas, Grandpas, Mimis, Papas, and even Dodos and ChewChews to share their experiences of 3rd grade “back in the day”. Students asked thoughtfully prepared questions (What financial advice can you offer a 3rd grader?) and were fascinated by class sizes (often in the 40s!), the cost of a movie (25 cents), and the things they shared in common (Nancy Drew is still a popular read). Afterward, guests were treated to a delicious tea in the library.
Deer Hill Family Handbook & Bus Expectations
Our Deer Hill Family Handbook is an important guide for procedures and expectations at school. Thank you for building familiarity with it. Earlier this week I emailed a refresher on some important topics that have bubbled up in the first month of school. I’d like to add to that the expectation that student behavior needs to reflect the Skipper Creed on our buses as well. Thank you for taking the time to reinforce this expectation with your students. Our goal is for students to arrive home safely while also making the jobs of our bus drivers a positive experience.
MCAS Results
Today MCAS results were mailed to all families of students currently in grades 4 and 5 who took the Spring 2019 administration of the test. This is the third year of next-generation MCAS in the subjects of English language arts and math. To learn more about this assessment and your child’s scores, please visit the following sites: http://www.doe.mass.edu/mcas/parents/ and http://www.doe.mass.edu/mcas/results.html
Nobel Prize for Medicine
Congratulations to the family of our own 3rd grade teacher, Mrs. Holland! This week it was announced that her brother, Dr. William G. Kaelin, Jr. was one of three researchers to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine for his work in how cells sense and adapt to oxygen availability. Mrs. Holland shared that her brother’s passion for science began in his high school science classes. I think at Deer Hill we’re getting a running start as we have many passionate scientists in our midst. Here is a heartwarming video about Dr. Kaelin’s receipt of this reward.
