Special Seminar: Approaches to Learning in the IB Continuum
Facilitator: Richard Hood
This one-day session will focus on the ‘learning’ component of the IB’s Approaches to Teaching and Learning document. In an environment that fosters collegial sharing and growth, participants will be able to explore:
- the research-based best practices of an ‘optimal learning environment’
- the alignment of classroom practice with the IB mission and Learner Profile
- the techniques colleagues use to foster student engagement
- a deeper understanding of the needs of adolescent learners and learning
- the balance of cognitive and social/emotional learning opportunities that promote student growth
Participants will experience guided inquiry and group work investigations/presentations throughout this session.
Sign up for an inspiring experience!

The Personal Project and Community Service
“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘what you are doing for others?’” -Martin Luther King
Service and actions are at the heart of quality education and life itself. Join veteran MYP and DP teachers, Sarah Clancy and Matthew Pagnani from International Academy (Oakland County), for an interactive presentation about service as action, CAS, and the Community & Personal Projects.
IB invites us as educators to be caring, knowledgeable and internationally-minded citizens so that we can encourage our students to be the same. We cannot possibly do this without connecting our thinking and learning to action, and through the MYP and DP programmes our students have opportunities to explore their own interests, develop new ways to approach their observations, and promote action in themselves and others. In our sessions, we will offer a refresher on service as action, work together on some learning engagements that can be used in your own classrooms with Approaches to Learning, and outline ways to support our students from Community and Personal Projects through their CAS project. We have examples to show, stories to share, and practical ways to approach designing these MYP Projects.
