Sacred and Radical Hope
La Necesidad de Esperanza
Your weekly s'more taken over by Mr. Landrigan
Junot Diaz published an article last year about using radical hope as a weapon in the fight to make the world a more inclusive and just place. Last week I got together with a group of social-justice teacher-writers at the Teaching for Change office. We had gathered to start the process of writing about our teaching practices. At the beginning of our session, we read Diaz's article. Then we took some reflective writing time to capture who and what gives us radical hope in these times. When we shared our writing, it was our students, often mentioned by name, who give us this hope.
At the close of our session, we reconvened from our writing to return to these students saying their names aloud to one another. For me, it was a reminder of the powerful reason we teach; our students and the future they will create.
