Weekly Waddle
Pattengill Elementary School
April 5, 2024
Principal's Message
Pattengill Community,
I hope you each had an amazing Spring Break.
Reading Month Challenge
So many of our students (and families) participated in our March is Reading Month Challenge. Congratulations to Mrs. St. Charles' 1st Grade Class which had almost total class participation!
Solar Eclipse
Many of you are aware that April 8th will be a Solar Eclipse. Michigan is in the predicted path of totality, making the eclipse visible to us. According to NASA, the next eclipse won’t happen again for another 20 years so we hope to make this a memorable experience for our students. I'm dating myself, but I still remember being in elementary school during the last eclipse and going outside to watch.
Kids Heart Challenge
Today starts our Kids Heart Challenge with the American Heart Association. Last year we set a school fundraising record. We are hoping to beat our school record this year.
Have a great weekend and Go Tigers!

Leader in Me Parent University
Our Leader in Me parent event was held this week and hosted by our school counselor, Mrs. Lynch. The parent session gave an overview of the Leader in Me Core Paradigms and 7 Habits, emphasizing the development of leadership skills in children. Parents were also shown what Leader in Me looks like at Pattengill. Finally, parents left with how to include Leader in Me at home. Please see the link below for our Parent University Presentation.
M-STEP Testing
M-STEP Testing
3rd through 5th grade students will begin M-STEP testing in the coming weeks. 3rd and 4th grade students are assessed in ELA and Math while 5th grade will be assessed in ELA, Math, Science, and Social Studies. Schools and districts use test results, among others, for school improvement initiatives that benefit students. The data gathered from this year's state assessments and other data will help our staff support students when they return to school next school year and move forward with their education.
Before the Test Tips
*Develop a positive attitude. Tell yourself, "I will do my best on this test."
*Get a good night's sleep the night before the test.
*Get up early enough to avoid hurrying to get ready for school.
*Eat a healthy breakfast.
During the Test Tips
*Relax and Stay calm.
*Listen carefully to the directions the teacher gives.
*Ask questions if you don't understand what to do.

Solar Eclipse Safety at Pattengill
Eye Safety
This eclipse will last from approximately 1:40 to 4:27 with the peak being at 3:14 pm (expected 98.8% coverage!). Directly viewing an eclipse can cause permanent eye damage, so our students will dismiss with district-provided Solar Eclipse glasses for all students. Please remind your students to use proper eye protection when viewing the eclipse.
Supervision
Our students will be supervised during outdoor activities, especially during the peak of the eclipse. Our grassy area in front of the school and the grassy field behind the baseball field are our designated areas for safe viewing. Students may view the eclipse as guided and monitored by staff, but there will be no outdoor recess District-wide after lunch on April 8th.
Dismissal
We will dismiss at our usual time, however students will have solar eclipse glasses with them at dismissal. Please have your student wear their glasses if they plan on viewing the eclipse.
PTA Scholastic Book Fair is Next Week!

Meet Our Pattengill Support Staff
Nancy Henzman, Occupational Therapist
I've been an Occupational Therapist in Berkley Schools for 9 yrs. I work with students with a wide range of differences/needs. Occupational Therapists in the school setting work with "occupations" of children. Their jobs include activities of daily living, handwriting, school tool use and sensory processing. I'm so fortunate to be able to play at work and support staff with the growth and development of our Penguins!
