Second Street Happenings
Winter Festival
Second Street’s current 8th graders will be going to Washington D.C for their 8th grade trip towards the end of the year. The fee is quite costly and our school is trying to raise money so our students don’t have to pay as much. On Thursday, February 28, Second Street is hosting a Winter Festival! The festival will be from 5:30-7:00. There will be food, games, an auction, a dance party, face painting and so much more! All it costs is $5. Join us on February 28 to help support our 8th grade students.
Valentine's Day
by Lainey T.
Happy Valentines Day SSS! We celebrate Valentine's Day on February 14. Valentine's Day was named after a saint named Valentine. Valentine was a priest in Rome in the third century. The emperor at the time made it illegal for young men to be married however Valentine did not listen and keep marrying people. Later on, the emperor found out that Valentine was continuing to marry young men and later killed Valentine.
February 14th was already a holiday at the time, known as ¨Lupercalia.¨ This holiday was a pagan (pagan means non-Christian) holiday. In the fifth century (200 years later) the pope made the pagan holiday illegal and declared a new holiday called Saint Valentineś day. Over the years, Saint Valentine´s became Valentines.

Presidential Candidates
by Audrey G.
Julián Castro
On January 12, Julián Castro announced his candidacy in both English and Spanish in San Antonio, Texas. Castro is targeting Latino voters, specifically their feelings during the Trump administration. As the former mayor of this border city, he is an advocate for immigration. He is using his Latino heritage and his political background as strong pulls in this election.
Julián Castro worked as the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development under the Obama administration. During his time in the Cabinet, he took action on cities stricken by natural disasters and the Fair Housing Act. He has stayed true to the Democratic parties policies concerning LGBTQ rights, gun rights, and abortion. He is a fairly well-known candidate, but he still has a little ways to go to become a frontrunner.
John Delaney
John Delaney announced his candidacy on July 28, 2017, by writing an op-ed piece for the Washington Post. He is a former Representative from Maryland, and has been involved within the private sector for a while. As the co-founder of the CapitalSource and Health Care Financial Partners, Delaney has come into some money. Although he could be using his own money to fund his campaign, he is a strong believer in campaign finance reform.
He has supported stricter gun control policies and called for an end to gerrymandering. He has been campaigning for a while now, but he still needs to make himself more well-known if he wants to become a strong contender in this elections.

Civility: An American Crisis
by Rebecca V.
Recently, the governor of Kentucky has been under fire for making some comments about America being “soft.” The public has scrutinized him for making his extremely uncivil comments, yet they praise Al Roker for making comments directed to the governor that were just as uncivil. One would think that a 64-year-old man would perhaps be a bit more grown-up than to call someone a “nitwit.” Not to say that Governor Bevin was in the right, but come on, I think that we could all agree that America could use a bit more civility.
Perhaps another headlining feud, at a more national level, is the Donald Trump-Nancy Pelosi arguments. Although the government shutdown has ended, the enmity is certain to continue. With insults being hurled both ways, I would not be shocked to see another government shutdown in the near future.
Yet another example of America’s lack of civility is the Covington Catholic School issue. Although the available videos contradict each other, the one thing that is certain is that insults were hurled. The very idea that this has been taken as just “another example” of the lack of civility in America shows just how much we’ve come to tolerate, even tune out, this crisis.
One gift that America has proven to be pretty terrible at is the gift of civility. Whether it’s our nation’s leaders, our authorities, or our peers, when there’s a disagreement in America, you bet it’s going to blow up. And it’ll be a hundred times worse if the disagreement occurs on social media. As decent human beings, we need to learn to tolerate each other, we need to learn empathy, We need to learn to consider other people to be actual human beings.
Once, a long time ago, I was listening to a friend of mine rant about how someone hadn’t done something. I can’t remember the specifics, but a close relative of the person was sick, and so they hadn’t been able to do something for my friend. My friend was so extremely irritated at this person and seemed to think that this person was “exaggerating” and how they still have a “responsibility” when, really, this person didn’t owe her anything.
If America can’t be civil, we are bound to crash and burn. I can’t count the number of times that I’ve become super irritated with a friend because they just seem to not be able to “agree to disagree” with me.
I’m just as guilty of this, and I’m sure that you are too. So I beg you, let’s try to be civil. As decent human beings, we owe it to each other and to ourselves to even just make a slight effort to be civil to one another.
SSS Needs a Ping Pong Club
Second Street School should have a ping pong club. This would be held at our school and should start soon. Students and administrators alike will be needed to get this club started.
I have recently started playing ping-pong and it is a very fun game. Because it is such a fun game, I would like to share the experience. The U.S. Table Tennis website has information on how to start a ping-pong club. It also has information on setting up workshops for teachers/coaches, how to connect with other schools that have ping-pong clubs, and how schools can receive assistance for providing equipment. Ping-pong tables also fold up and are stored very easily, plus our gym is easily big enough to hold four to six ping-pong games simultaneously.
Ping-pong, from a personal standpoint, is an extremely fun game. It also improves hand-eye coordination, and it provides an after-school club while being an individual or doubles sport.
In conclusion, if there is anyone at Second Street School that would like to see a ping-pong club formed, talk to your teacher, Dr.Hensley, or Mr.Adams and see if we can start a ping-pong club!
To Kill A Mockingbird Review
by Campbell S.
Our 7th and 8th graders to a walking field trip to FHS to see the Bluegrass Theater Guild’s production of To Kill A Mockingbird. The show starred a few students from both SSS/FMS and FHS. Students from FMS, FHS, Capital Day and Western Hills were invited to see the first showing of the production. If you aren’t familiar with the books/movie/play, the show covers topics about the Great Depression, slavery, rape, and repeatedly uses a word that our society frowns upon today. Though the show was directed and set well, some students didn’t seem like they enjoyed the show.
Students were yelling and making remarks throughout the show which was very unneeded during most of the show. While watching the show, I noticed that the actors didn’t seem like they knew what to do when this takes place. As an actress, I’ve learned that when the audience claps, laughs or makes any time of reaction to a scene, the actors on stage are supposed to stop and wait until the noise has died down to continue the show. This is one of the most important things to remember as an actor and as a viewer during this production I missed some of the show because the actors didn’t stop the show momentarily.
Before the show started, the audience was warned about the topics the show covers but some students failed to listen to that. When the show first said the “n-word,” the audience exploded in surprise to the word being said multiple times in one sentence. Although I do understand that this is a word that students don’t expect to hear in a theatre production, they should have prepared themselves to react to that rather than exploding in surprise. This also leads to the actors not stopping the show for the audience to quiet down.
Besides the audience being disrespectful, the show was honestly amazing. The set was perfect for the show and didn’t need to be changed a lot for the show to move along slowly. It allowed the audience to feel like they were really looking at the place the show took place which can sometimes be difficult for set makers to do. The actors made the show flow along so well and were able to not freak out with the content the show covered. They also seemed to be really into their characters which made them seem even more alive to the audience. Overall, the show was great and I would definitely see it again. The ticket is definitely worth the cost of $10.

The Box Braids Girl, part 1
by Kira C.
As I rummaged through my small make-up bag for my eye shadow, I thought I saw someone standing in my doorway. My head shot up thinking it was my mom, but no one was there. I had just woke up so I brushed it off. I finished my make-up and headed to the kitchen to make omelets. I was beating eggs as I heard the faucet turn on. I looked once again to see if mom had woke up and was washing a cup so she could drink some coffee but no one was there. I quickly turned off the sink and went to get the rest of the stuff I needed for my south-western omelets. After I got done with making omelets, I poured a cup of coffee and took it to my mom who’s alarm had just gone off. She was still half asleep so I set it on her nightstand.
“Mom,” I said quietly, Your breakfast is ready, I set it on the nightstand.” She rolled over to face me.
“
Is that coffee I smell,” she asked sitting up and grabbing the cup so she could take a sip.
“Yup it’s coffee” I laughed. I was about to walk back to my room when I heard her say my name.
“ Kira,” she said with a full mouth,” thanks, this is amazing.”
I walked back to my room and plugged my headphones into my android, and watched ssniperwolf’s video on scariest 911 calls. Once again, I thought I saw someone in the doorway but no one was there. This time I got up and went to the door. I looked both ways down the hall and checked the spare bedroom and the bathroom. Stop it Kira, no ones in the house but you and mom, I thought to myself, but I had a feeling something was wrong.
“Mom,” I hollered down the hall, “did dad go to work today?”
“Yeah, why,” she yelled back from her room,
“Just wondering,” I hollered back. I walked back to my bedroom and locked my door. I was tired so I laid on my bed and turned on my ps4 and played Skyrim until 5:00, which was an hour before auditions for the box braids girl. After about two minutes of fighting dragons, my head stopped swimming and my awareness faded away. When my alarm went off, I grabbed my clothes and got dressed. The outfit I chose was my skinny jeans, a cropped off sweatshirt, and my new white and black Adidas. As I french-braided my hair I told mom I was about to leave. She was now in the living room playing GTA V. The phone in my pocket buzzed, so I quickly pulled it out and checked it. Andrew, I thought as I started smiling. I sent him a “hey babe” text and he texted right back and said he loved me and asked me how my day was going. I told him I was good and had auditions today. He wished me luck and said he still couldn’t believe we were dating. My heart was beating so fast, as I told how much he meant to me, and how lucky I was to have him, that I loved him more than anything in the world. He sent me several heart-eye emojis and told me to get to auditions. I ran to the high school next door for auditions in the auditorium and took the seat next to my friend, Hallie and told her the tea about me and Andrew. Her eyes grew so wide as I showed her the texts leading up to him asking me out.
“Tea,” she said her eyes still wide, “ you need to write a play about this. The long-distance romance by Kira Capley.”
“Not happening” I laughed, even though I had a play in progress about us and hundreds of poems.
“ I know that look,” Hallie taunted “ You already did, didn't you?”
“Well,” I said kinda nervously.
“You have to tell Lucy about this,” she stated matter-of-factly.

***Disclaimer: These are MY opinions so please do not get offended by my remarks.
Breaking:
Former Chiefs Running Back Kareem Hunt just signed with the Cleveland Browns. Kareem Hunt was kicked off of the Chiefs because he physically abused and kicked a woman and lied to the team about it. This shows a no-tolerance move for the Chiefs as they still did fantastic this season without Hunt. And what really led the Chiefs and Andy Reid to believe that he actually did lie to the team was when a video was released. Also, Patrick Mahomes signed a record-breaking contract the other day. The young MVP is now going to be the first NFL player to sign a $200 million contract. And as people expected it is with the Kansas City Chiefs. They will never let him go.
My Opinions on it:
First of all, Kareem Hunt deserved to get cut. While he is extremely talented, he shouldn’t have hurt that woman. And like I said in the news part, this shows a no-tolerance move on the Chiefs’ part. Especially since in his rookie year Hunt lead the league in rushing yards. Anyway, while I do wish he was still on the Chiefs, I believe that he shouldn’t have abused that woman. And now to my favorite player, Patrick Mahomes. The Chiefs were right for offering him $200 million in exchange for being on the team. I mean when he was in college he could throw 80 yards. He is extremely talented and needs to always stay on the Chiefs. However, I am surprised that no other NFL players have signed a $200 million contract. I would have thought that Tom Brady or Peyton Manning would have signed one. Oh well, I guess that those were all my opinions on these two topics. So I’ll sign off for now. Until next week, I’m Sam Gilbert.
Did you know?
Did You Know? The word nimrod doesn't mean stupid. It means old. The word nimrod is thought to mean stupid because in multiple Bugs Bunny cartoons Bugs called Elmer Fudd a nimrod. He called him this in time Elmer was acting stupid. This really meant that Elmer Fudd was acting old but people in America always thought that this word meant stupid or dumb.
Advice from Miss Knows a Lot and Miss Helping Hands
Dear Miss Knows-a-lot,
I like this boy that I have known for a long time, but I think he is too shy to ask me out. What do I do?
Dear Anonymous,
This is a very frequent question we get and I am going to be very upfront with it. Just tell him how you feel. If he is too shy to ask you out just tell him how you feel and maybe he will then ask you out. It is okay to be straightforward and to make the first move. Don’t wait to do something that doesn’t seem normal, you might end up regretting never saying anything. That is about all of the advice I can give about relationships and stuff like that but I hope that this helped.
Sincerely,
Miss Knows-A-Lot
