1st Grade Social Studies
Symbols in the Community and Country
Students will recognize and explain the significance of US symbols such as the Statue of Liberty, U.S. Capitol, Bald Eagle and Liberty Bell.
Students will also explore significant symbols of the local community such as Post Office, Fire Department, Sports/Mascots, Police Stations, Schools/Mascots, Medical Facilities, etc.

3rd Grade Science
Unit 1: Social and Group Behavior (cont)
Students will look at how animals interact with one another using pasta noodles to simulate gathering food. They will then do an activity called Strength in Numbers.
Unit 1: Inheritance and Variation of Traits (Cont)
If they all have the same parents, why don’t the puppies in a litter look exactly alike?
Students will look at their physical features and compare traits. They will compare this to plants traits. Last, they will look at how dogs bred together have a combination of traits.
STEMScopes 3D: Mission Performance Task from the Action Plan
The student’s mission is to research an animal and its environment in order to create a diorama showing the plant and animal life cycles and the benefits of the animal living in a group.
4th Grade Social Studies and Science
Unit 1: Plants' Effects on Regions (cont)
Students look at how plants and animals affect our environment. They will then create a public service announcement about how an invasive species can affect the environment.
Unit 1: Plate Tectonics (cont)
Why are there more earthquakes in certain places?
Last, they will look at how earthquakes are predicted and the affect they have on the land.
Social Studies Unit 1: Regions of the US
Overview if the unit: In this unit students will explore the five regions of the United States--Midwest, Northeast, Southeast, West, Southwest. Within each region students will study a region’s natural resources, culture, and significant individuals. This work will be completed in research groups that mirror those established later in the year in the 4th grade nonfiction reading units (Reading Science, Reading the World and Reading History ).
5th Grade Science and Social Studies
Unit 1: Basic Needs (Cont)
Students start by writing about the basic needs of a pet. They then create a 3-D model of the environment for an animal. They then do a PBL to research the solution to preserving the habitat of an endangered species.
Unit 1: Ecosystems (cont)
Why would adding a new fish to an aquarium cause the other fish to become sick?
They look at omnivores, carnivores and herbivores and what happens when one of those populations increases. Last, they create a blueprint to help contain an increasing population of pythons.
Social Studies Unit 1: Territorial Expansion
Overview of Unit: In this unit students will discover what led to the expansion of our country and the lasting
implications of the expansion. They will apply this knowledge to present day situations of migration and
technology advances in communication, travel, and economics.
