Stellar Second Graders

Conferences
We are meeting with families on Tuesday next week. Thanks for everyone who has come thus far. We look forward to talking with each of you about your son or daughter's progress in first grade so far this year. Our school is working to stay on time for all our schedules meetings. When you hear the bell we will wrap things up so we can start our next conferences. Thank you for your time. We appreciate getting to know you more and sharing all the amazing things our students are learning!
Language Workshop
Reader's Workshop
This week, students focused on the difference between the traits of a character versus the feelings of a character. Traits tend to be more ingrained in the essence of the character, but the feelings can change frequently throughout a story. This week, we look at Nate the Great to determine their character traits and feelings in some of their beloved stories!
Writer's Workshop
This week in Writer's Workshop, students focused on adding transition words, reasons plus examples, and conclusion sentences to their opinion writing. Transition words are important to signal to the reader that you are moving on to another point in your opinion story. Giving more information and examples to your reasons add more depth to your writing. For example, you can say, "I like blueberries because they are blue." That is great, but adding an explanation, such as "Blue is my favorite color," gives the reader more information. Students are trying to add more examples to support their three reasons in their opinion story. Finally, students are looking to add an exciting ending to their story. Asking a question can be one way to enhance your writing. What is your child working on this week? Ask them their goal in Writer's Workshop.
Math Workshop
Math Workshop is an exciting place to be! Students are focused on using open number lines to add and subtract. By breaking apart the hundreds, tens, and ones, students are able to efficiently jump on the number line and find the answer to solve their problem.
Fall Halloween Party
We will be having our Fall Party from 2:15 - 3:15 on Wednesday, October 31st. Students will be participating in games and crafts during they party. No food will be allowed during the party per school rules. Costumes can be brought to school to wear during the party but must be school appropriate and easy for the students to get on and off in the classroom. Thanks to those parents who volunteered to organize the parties. We appreciate your help! Looking forward to a fun event for the kids!
