Make Monster Guacamole and Unicorn Milkshakes with Ms. Schilling
As part of this year's Schoolwide Community Read, Ms. Schilling led two cooking activities after school! Fun and delicious food were had by all! Scroll down to see some pictures from the events!
First, students learned how to make "Monster Guacamole. " In the novel, Fablehaven, there lives a hermit troll named Bubda. This event was inspired by the guacamole recipe attributed to him in the official Fablehaven cookbook, which claims it is a special recipe that he only shares with his closest friends.
Our second cooking event involved making and decorating "Unicorn Milkshakes." In the novel, unicorns are considered rare and some believe them to be extinct. Yet, our main character secretly hopes to meet a unicorn and keeps an eye out for one as the plot progresses. Do you think she will be able to meet a unicorn? Make sure to read Fablehaven to find out!
Dragon Paper Airplane Craft
During lunch periods, students were able to get special event passes to visit the library and make paper flying dragons. Students were able to pick from a selection of different dragons - Mountain, Ice, Hatchling, etc. A short reading about the dragon and directions were also provided. Check out some pictures below!
In Fablehaven by Brandon Mull, the main characters discover that the yard at their Grandparents’ house is actually a magical preserve. It is home to an array of magical beings, such as trolls, fairies, and golems. Similar properties exist around the world. Will our characters encounter a dragon? Read to find out!
Birdhouse Wind Chime Craft with Ms. Pekusic
Ms. Pekusic helped facilitate an activity where students were provided a kit with the pieces to make a birdhouse with wind chimes on the bottom. Students were encouraged to design, decorate, and build small houses for magical beings to live in (such as the fairies from Fablehaven). Take a look at some of their creations!
Chicken Shaped Magnet Craft
During lunch periods, students were able to get special event passes to the library to create a chicken shaped magnet. Students were provided a wooden cutout shaped like a chicken, a glue dot, and a magnet. They were able to color the wooden chicken, sticking with traditional designs or going for more whimsical and magical ones. See the pictures below!
In Fablehaven, there is a chicken named Goldilocks that appears multiple times throughout the novel. At first, our main characters are asked to look after Goldilocks while their grandmother is not there. What role does Goldilocks play in the story? Why is Goldilocks so important? Read Fablehaven to find out!
Macrame (Knot) Art with Ms. Azzara
Ms. Azzara and Mrs. Poplawski hosted a craft event after school. Students learned the art of macrame, which involves knotting cord to make decorative articles. During the event, students learned how to make two different types of knots in order to great gnomes. Scroll down to see some pictures from the event!
In Fablehaven, there is a witch whose magic has been sealed by a rope with 13 magical knots. The knots could only be undone by a mortal who asked for a favor of their own free will. They would have to say, "Of my own free will, I sever this knot", and blow on a knot in order to undo it. What role might she play in Fablehaven? Read to find out!
