Spooner High Update

Closing Up the Year
Spring Testing Underway
Freshman and sophomores are entering the first round of state testing today and continuing next week with ACT Aspire. Letters were sent home to help families understand the purpose of the tests. Freshman will test next Wednesday and Friday, and Sophomores will test next Tuesday and Thursday. Please help your students by helping them get rest and being mindful about breakfast habits.
The week after graduation, all freshman through juniors will take their final assessment for STAR Reading and Math. It will be important for us to use that information in planning for next year with many of the goals our building is setting in relation to learning supports. Please contact Dr. Dejager with any questions about STAR testing.
Parent Information for Two Topics of Concern
Parent Awareness: Nerf Wars Promote Distracted Driving--Prohibited on School Grounds
You may have heard of a popular trend that was taking place last year with many teens across the nation related to "Nerf Wars". Many students view this is a harmless game with their peers. The activity usually involves teams who use Nerf guns to engage in mock wars. Often teens will use social media to track points and winners. Sometimes money is exchanged for prizes. At Spooner High School. we are not aware of Nerf wars taking place currently, though it has been indicated to us by a few parents that there have been past activities related to this.
We wanted to bring this to your attention because distracted driving is the main concern. When students are engaged with this activity, they are putting themselves, passengers in their vehicles, and other drivers at great risk. Students are prohibited from engaging in this activity on school grounds, and we wanted to be sure all parents were aware of this issue. If you do a quick Google search, you can learn more about it and see that there is a student in Minnesota who sadly died in a car accident related to Nerf War activity.
Parent Awareness: Netflix Series "13 Reasons Why" Raising Alarm
We wanted to communicate to parents that it may be important to be aware whether or not your teen is watching this show and encourage you to engage in healthy dialogue about it if that is the case. While there are many resources and news information about this hot topic, you might find the following resource helpful in learning a little more about the context related to why this show is controversial.
