Enrichment January News
The best part of your child's day!
Jennifer Ashmore, Art Teacher
In ART class we will continue to learn about and do artwork in the style of a different artist each month. The children have learned about Keith Haring, George Rodrigue and Vincent van Gogh. They have learned the different Art styles in which these artists created their work. These styles include Contemporary Art, Abstract Art and also Expressionism. The children have just completed artwork in van Gogh Expressionist style for our Rodeo Art projects this year. Rodeo Art took longer than I anticipated so we have just begun learning about our next artist, Paul Klee.

Happy Reading!!

Let’s make some music! In MUSIC class, Challenger musicians practice and develop rhythmic skills, melodic skills and listening skills in age-appropriate, FUN ways. We make and experience music together using singing voices, instruments, movement, children’s books, and games. And we READ music, using visual representation and music notation. Every time students come to class, we: Sing, Move, Play, Listen (like musicians do), and Create!
In January, we celebrate Winter! Your student may come home singing songs or speaking rhymes about winter, snowmen, snowflakes and Jack Frost.
I'm looking forward to leading the Ride Challengers in playing lots of instruments, as we have gotten some wonderful new things in the music room thanks to Ride's Reading Adventure as well as a TMEA grant! Your students will be playing woodblocks, finger cymbals, sandblocks, tambourines and lots of other small percussion as part of music class. We will also be using hand drums, barrred instruments, and fourth grade will be using ukeleles!
Happy New Year, let's make it musical!

Happy, Healthy, Active New Year to all! Ride Challengers are continuing to review and learn new skills while exploring healthy lifestyle choices. We are kicking off 2014 with units focusing on fitness, striking with long handled implements (hockey), and hand dribbling (basketball). Sending your student to school in tennis shoes every day promotes active play during recess and motor lab, in addition to physical education.
The start of a new chapter is a great time to evaluate how families can choose to be active together. Focus on making this time enjoyable for all, which associates positive emotions with physical activity. How many ways can your family be active in your community?
