Ms. Arnold's Class: Adopt-a-Family for the Holidays
In lieu of gifts for me, the classroom, or for other classmates this year, I am hoping instead that everyone is able to find a little something for our adopted family. The family is from the Interfaith Shelter. You do not need to worry about supplying anything for the class party. I will take care of everything for the party. I appreciate all the help we can give our adopted family this season. I do encourage all students to participate. I don't want anyone to feel disappointed on wrapping day. If you are not able to get to the store, I am willing to do the shopping for you. Just send in the money and a list and I will get the gift(s) for you and your student. In the past, my classes have been overjoyed with the results of our coming together for a family in need this season. Wrapping day is always a powerful, moving experience for the kids. The family we are adopting includes a mom, dad, and 2 girls ages 3 and 5. I will send their wishlist in a separate attachment no later than Wed, Dec 5th. Please have all gifts to me anytime before Dec 21st and/or on the 21st. We are in need of wrapping paper and scotch tape as well. I will be delivering the gifts after school on Dec 21st. Sometimes I am able to get a picture to share while other times the family prefers to keep their privacy. I know we can fill their hearts this Christmas!
Thank you for all you do and for helping me help our students to reach out to our community with generosity and love this holiday season! All of our hearts will be filled from this experience! So thank you for your support! I couldn't do it without you. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

Adopt-a-Family Wish List Coming Wed, Dec 5th!!!
Lansing Field Trip is this Wednesday (5th)
2. Chaperones if you can meet us in the classroom at 8:25 I will provide paperwork and review the day.
3. Please bring lunches.
4. Devices are allowed on the bus ride. It is up to you if you want them to have it at school.
5. Since we do not have our class shirts yet, students could wear anything Michigan Center focused.

8. Chaperones will have a small group when we are at the museum tour and lunch. At the capitol tour I will guide the group. Meaning we will all travel together as a class. I do encourage students with chaperones still remain with the class so they hear and see everything the tour guide is presenting.

Weekly Learning Targets
Reading:
On a daily/weekly basis, students get focused lessons on good reading habits, fluency and comprehension, shared reading, book of the day read-alouds, conferencing, a variety of reading skills and strategies, the tools in the classroom to help them, choice reading, content area reading, goal setting, booktalks and book trailers, and author and genre discussions and reflections.
Ongoing Reading Learning Targets...
-I use my 5 senses to help me visualize while I'm reading.
-I can make connections while I read.
-I can make a prediction while I read my book.
-I can pick a just fit book that's just right for me using the IPICK Strategy.
-I can use the BHH reading strategy (book, head, heart).
-I can practice good reading habits by rereading to check my comprehension.
-I can demonstrate my comprehension through writing which includes providing evidence from the text to support my thinking. (summarizing-reflecting and discuss-evidence)
-I can infer my character's thoughts, actions, traits, as well as my book's theme or message.
-I can work hard to meet my Lexia minutes by the end of the week.
This Week's Writing Learning Targets... (unit: personal narrative)
-I can brainstorm details for my personal narrative.
-I can prewrite (organize) my personal narrative prior to drafting.
-I can draft a personal narrative across pages in my book.
-I can add dialogue to my personal narrative.
-I can revise my personal narrative to have an exciting lead and ending.
-I can free write about a variety of topics including personal stories from my life.
-I can identify the six features of a personal narrative.
Math Learning Targets: (unit: addition/subtraction/place value/estimating)
-I can round numbers to the nearest 10, 100 using number lines or using place value.
-I can add/subtract two and three digits numbers using one of the math strategies.
-I can estimate two and three digit numbers.
-I can use the inverse strategy to check my addition and my subtraction.
-I can work hard to meet my I-Ready minutes by the end of the week.
Science Learning Targets: (unit: forces/motion and STEM Challenges)
-I can determine which materials slide with little friction or a lot of friction.
-I can build and test a design with 6 nails and balance them on one nail.
-I can identify the different forces used in the nail challenge.
-I can build a strong bridge that will hold a lot of pennies.
-My group and I can build a free-standing tower using only straws and tape.
-My group and I can observe a HOPPER'S FORCE and determine the height it hops.
Side Note:
Students will not have science and social studies unit tests throughout the year nor will they have homework in those areas. Math is the only subject where students could have some homework but never on a weekly basis. At the end of a math unit, students will have a unit test. Writing pieces are not sent home until the end of the unit. Our first piece, the narrative, takes most if not all of the first trimester. I will help keep you informed on what your child is doing in school on a regular basis.
***Social Studies content standards are mostly covered in the third trimester.
