Getting an Instrument
WARNING! There are several "too good to be true" deals on the internet. We caution you about these deals because they are TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE. Many of these instruments that claim to be "brand new, in the plastic, comes with gloves" are poorly made and tend to break easily. In addition, most instrument repair places won't work on these instruments. Brands to stay away from include (but not limited to) Glory, Merano, Hawk, Etude, Jean Paul, Bentoni, Mendini, YMC, Hisonic, Legacy, and Lazarro.
Make sure that you've acquired the following materials by the start of the school year.
- Instrument (the percussion Kits must have bells AND a drum pad, not a drum)
- Tradition of Excellence Book 1 (red cover & instrument specific)
- Extra Reeds~ Sax & Clarinet only, purchasing by the box is most cost effective and the Rico 2 1/2 are a good start.
- Valve Oil & Slide Grease~ Brass Instruments Only
- Cleaning Swabs~Flutes, Clarinet, Saxophone
- Cork Grease~Clarinet & Saxophone
- Music Stand~ optional, but strongly encouraged, for at home for practicing
Do you already have your instrument?
- Please wait until school starts and your beginner has been given instructions on how to properly assemble, care for and make their first sounds on their instrument. We encourage patience so students do not form bad habits and/or damage their new instrument!
- It's important to know it's in good, functional condition, If you're not sure, we highly recommend you stop into Rettig Music or Pro Music to have them check the instrument's playing condition. Mrs. Knowles or Mrs. Wilson are also happy to connect with you before school starts to assess an instrument's readiness to be played!
Beginning Band Parent Tips
- Have all materials for the first days of school, don't wait.
- The concert dates for the year are always sent home with the syllabus. Student attendance at the concerts are part of the band grade. Put these dates on your calendar so YOU can be there!
- Optional~ Instruments aren't cheap; consider adding the instrument to your homeowners/renters insurance.
- Always be encouraging! The sounds of a beginner player should be celebrated and filled with the hope of what is to come.
