PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
March has been a busy month at MES for our staff and students. Our Grades 3 & 4 choirs performed at different festivals in Steinbach and Winnipeg and did an excellent job! The Grade 4 choir won Gold at their festival. We were thrilled to have them perform for all of us this past week. Term 2 progress reports came out this month and are available on the parent portal. Also, our chocolate almond fundraiser began and we thank all of you for your continued support of MES!
Just a reminder that if you have a student who will be attending Kindergarten in the fall, the registration is available online at www.hsd.ca . Please complete the registration as soon as possible. We will be sending information out early in April about the Welcome to Kindergarten event.
The weather does not quite feel like spring this week. However, we hope that you all have a safe and enjoyable spring break! Classes will resume on Monday, April 1st.
CHOCOLATE FUNDRAISER
The Chocolate Fundraiser is in full swing! It will be closing on April 5th.
There are cases of chocolate covered almonds, cases of caramel whirls, and cases of mint
meltaways available for your child to sell. All cases are peanut-free. Each case will have 30
boxes which sell for $3 a box for a total of $90 for a case.
**Please make cheques payable to Mitchell Elementary or MES.**
For every case you sell, you will win a prize at our putting green, plus your name goes into a
draw for some random draws. Now, if that’s not enough, you also have the chance to win one
of the grand prizes of first, second, and third for the most cases sold.
Please bring all money and leftover chocolates to the library. If you have any questions, please contact Susan at snickel@hsd.ca
NEWS FROM THE MUSIC ROOM
Every student needs a soprano recorder with baroque fingering. While Yamaha recorders are preferred the following brands work as well - Aulos and Angel.
New Yamaha recorders are available for purchase at the school for $9.00. Please note that stock at school is limited.
LIBERIA FUNDRAISER
CARING FOR KIDS
MES is a place where we care about those around us in our community and for those who need help across the world.
For the past twelve years, MES has partnered with Provision of Hope in helping children from Liberia, Africa. Education has the power to change lives and gives children a chance to move ahead in life and break the cycle of poverty. Children in Liberia have to pay to go to school and if their family doesn't have enough money, they are not allowed to attend school which puts them at a great disadvantage. We want to help!
MES students will be participating in activities to learn about Liberia and the students we sponsor there. We have named this event “Caring for Kids.” On April 23rd, students will bring home envelopes to collect funds to continue sponsoring our 16 children for the next school year. Please return funds by May 6th and join us in caring for kids in Africa.
STUDENT FEES OVERDUE
We still have quite a few students that have not paid their school fees. Please pay online on Parent Portal or bring exact cash or a cheque payable to MES to the school office.

VISION SCREENING FOR GRADE 1'S
Hanover School Division is excited to announce that we have partnered with The Lions Club to offer vision screening to all of our students in Grade 1. The program is very similar to the hearing screening we conduct in the fall every year.
Members of The Lions Club have been trained in the use of the SPOT Vision Screener and will
use this tool to screen children in all HSD classrooms. The vision screener they use is capable of screening for Myopia (near-sightedness), Hyperopia (far-sightedness) and Anisocoria (pupil size deviation). In addition, Astigmatism (blurred vision), Anisometropia (unequal refractive power) and Strabismus (eye misalignment) which can result in Amblyopia (lazy-eye).
The individual screening takes just a few seconds and is performed from a distance of about three feet. There is no physical contact with the child and no eye drops are administered. The individual conducting the screening will provide a print-out of the results for each child for whom a follow up appointment is recommended with an eye care professional. If you would prefer to have your child "opt-out" of the screening assessment, please notify your child's teacher. It is important to understand that it is only a screening and does not constitute an examination or diagnosis of vision problems.
Our school screening days are scheduled for April 16 and 17, 2024.
This service is offered free of charge by the Lions Club under the MD5M Lions Kidsight vision screening program. A brochure with more information will be sent through Bright Arrow to all the Grade 1 students.
